Im a little confused! I have a 91 explorer 2w drive 4.0. For a while the trans. was leaking and slipping a little when the fluid was low. So I changed the pan gasket and all seemed fine for while. No visible leaks. Then the tranny started slipping again so I checked the fluid and it was low. But no leaks. Everything under the truck was clean and dry. However I did notice that my oil was now way overfull. So I searched this site and have determined that people with a similar problem had a bad modulator valve. Heres my problem. I have been under that vehicle numerous times looking for it and I just plain dont see it. I was concentrating on the passenger side but I've looked all over that damn thing and can't seem to locate it or any vacuum line to follow.
the passenger side is pretty tight what with the cat and heat sheild and all but man, i just dont know. Do I have to pop a mount loose or something to get at this thing or what? If any body can steer me in the right the direction I'd appreciate it.

It should be on the passenger side near the top of the tranny it is tough to get to but you can access it to remove it or replace it. just keep looking it is there!

Ok, just to be clear. I've searched this site and determined that my explo. needs the modulator valve. I've located it.
Is this just an on/off application or do I need to drop the pan and stuff. Do I need to do anything more than- old one off new one on. It seems like its that simple but I'd like to be sure. Thanks

the EASIEST way to do it is remove passenger and possibly front drivers seat in your X (i always remove both, but others dont.

Pull up carpet to expose the *hump* between the front seats.

Remove 4 bolts holding the access plate to the hump and looking down, its on the right side of the tranny with a vacuum hose going to it. Chances are you will need/want to replace that vacuum hose since the fluid tends to weaken it.

When you take the vacuum modulator valve out (a small 10 mm bolt holds it to the tranny, dont lose the pin that goes in the transmission.

Assembly is reverse of removal. you will also need to remove the heatshield when taking the mod valve off, but its simple to do as well. and requires a 10 mm wrench or socket also.
