ok.. so i am all excited i finally paid off my truck and all the mods...

its a 96 limited 4.0 4x4..
4,000 miles on a brand new engine
500 miles on a brand new tranny.
kept immaculate...
racing stripes over the hood.. unfortunatly... and hood scoops.
its got a premium sound system with eclipse head unit, 2 subs, and new components..

anyway.. i went to get it "valued" today.. and the guy told me only 3500 dollars???

he said it was because the odometer read 161,000... so im basically selling the car as if it still had that many miles. mind you i've totally re-done the suspension, new wires, plugs.. fixed just about EVERYTHING that could be wrong...

anyway.. what do you guys figure the value is? i am guessing around 8-9 grand with the current state of the vehicle..

the reason i ask is because i want to get a new car.. i just cant deal with this truck.. 16 miles to the gallon is tooo insane for me to be able to afford both gas money and school. i had no idea it would be as bad as it is, but im putting 100 bucks into it just in gas a month.. and i just cant afford it.

so yeah.. give me a sensible price.. id love to sell it to someone here, who would appreciate the thing.. or even trade it for a more "economical" vehicle.. i was thinking a civic or a eclipse... cant really beat the style and 26-30 miles a gallon.

if anyone is interested.. feel free to post.. or just post me a ballpark value of this truck.. i feel like my 6 grand into the engine and tranny plus my thousand into the suspension was all for nothing.

thanks for any help... i can send pics if your interested in a swap/purchase...

i hope noone thinks that im just trying to sell it.. i want a sincere estimate on my value.. i couldnt pic a better forum.. simply because everyone here knows what they are looking at and what they would pay for the truck.. i just want to know what is FAIR... just give me an idea..

it just frustrates me how little they value your car/truck at when it comes to situations like this.. blah.

Just remember, it is only worth what someone will pay for it. Yea, the 3500 is pretty ridiculous, but for the masses, the mileage just simply sounds bad. The trick will be finding someone who really knows what the vehicle and understands the value of what you have done to it.

To me, the truck prolly would be worth the 8-9K knowing the market in my area.

Well I see your in my neck of the woods, so I do know a little about the value of cars in this area. Where did you get it 'valued'? If you wait till Sept/Oct when the weather starts getting nasty, or even better yet, once it starts snowing, the value will go up a lot, if its 4x4. Naturally the value will go down when the snow melts. Because it is over the 100000 mile mark, that will take a pretty good toll on the value, it happens with all cars. I would say its worth a lot more than $3500, but if you want, I will drive up there tonight and buy it for $3500 with cash :D I would say put it in the GR Press with whatever you think its worth, and see if you get any hits. Just keep lowering it a lil at a time until somebody buys it...Thats what I have done in the past...Good luck!

PS what part of GR do you live in?

I've often wondered about how the value of my Ex would be changed with modifications. I always love randomly looking up Blue Book values of vehicles, but that doesn't work with modified vehicles.

But luckily I'm not planning on selling the Explorer anytime soon, so I don't really *have* to know the price :)

milegae vs. value

The thing you have to keep in mind is that most places go by Kelly blue book or the other one.......My 94, with 89k on it, and in nice shape, is worth only $5000 (I owe almost $6k...damn)....

The higher mileage (albeit lower than yours) affects the value greatly, as most folks dont want a vehicle with 80k and up.......old ways die hard I guess.....

Unless you have meticulous paperwork, saying that you have a new engine in it may not be a big deal for them...the REST of teh truck still has 161k miles on it...and tehres a LOT to go wrong with a 4x4 at that mileage.....

I have put a new tranny, new brake cylinder and calipers, two front lines, two front hoses on it and thats pretty much it....I recently got udner the truck and wirebrushed and painted the floor pans and whatnot to try to stave of rust a little longer.....

I was considering trading in on a 2002 but the prices are too steep..will wait till at least next year.....I am actually pretty happy with my 94, althouigh I wish it had a LITTLE more umph.

The strories I have read on this forum make me feel a LOT better in holding on a while longer....my 89k miles seems to be almost low mileage <grin>

well.. i go to school at calvin.. so im on 28th and east belt line.. i dont know anyone down this area really so we should hook up.. maybe you know some trails.. haha..

yeah its kinda discouraging.. i put 6 grand into this damn thing.. i mean, when i swapped the engine.. i changed EVERYTHING that looked like it might have the slightest bit of wear.. and didnt even waste time with the tranny.. swapped EVERYTHING.. now im working on the suspension...

i got it valued at a local apprasal house.. my mom knows them somehow and they value cars for our family (mostly classics, exotics, etc..) so thats why i thought that the hard work i put in would "pay off"... eh.. i know that it would go for the right price to the right person who wanted it. im sure that 8 grand could be a fair price as well.. i cant say i would be terribly happy loosing it for that...

thanks for the comments..

Best bet is to look at traderonline.com and see what other vehicles like yours are selling for in your area. I have never trusted KBB or Edmunds.

About appraisals: I had a BMW 535 Wagon once that I knew I could sell immediately for 9k, or 10K if I wanted to wait for the right person. I took it to Carmax and their "profesionals" valued it at 6300. I put it in the paper and sold it in 2 days for 9500.

Change the cluster (or the odometer) for a new one and add the real mileage. That's fair, don't agree?

Andy :D

Carmax is darn $$$$. I guess your paying for service and whatnot. And i don't believe you can even haggle at carmax? When i was lookin for trucks, carmax was much higher than a local ford dealer wanted for the same comparable truck.
