Someone here who had a pristine '94 Explorer with very low miles. Garage kept and it was about as flawless an example as I have seen it a long time and could have been put into a museum. I think it sold for way less than $8k. I agree with Mbrooks. To get even $2k for a 92 Explorer would be tough to do. The good thing is that what you wanting to trade up to won't be all that expensive either.
This may be true elsewhere, but not California. In some regions it's possible to get $1500 to retire a perfectly good anything manufactured '94 and before. Also a seller's market here for months even with the fuel cost climb. I've even seen a couple of first gens on used lots. Haven't seen that in a while.

You can look at Edmunds, Kelley, even your local Craigslist to get an idea. Varies greatly by location. Checked Craigslist yesterday, prices on older vehicles in running condition are double what they were last year.
