Valve-cover leaks

After roughly 105,000 miles, I'm getting a little weary of the oil-smoke, and the spots on the driveway. If I should someday (foolishly) take socket-wrench in hand, what do I look forward to when attempting to change valve-cover gaskets? Don't suppose I could just put gasket sealer in with the oil... Thanks for any help, even if it's just to say "take it to the dealer"!

Hey Randy,

I wouldn't say "foolishly". Changing the valve cover gasket is just about the easiest project you can do under the hood. Just go to your local parts store and by a quality gasket. Unbolt the valve cover, clean off the old gasket from the covers and heads (be sure not to drop old gasket pieces in the rocker/valve area. Follow the gasket manufactures instructions and your done.

I would recommend doing both gaskets at the same time. Might as well nip it in the bud!

Never ever ever ever put any kind of "leak sealer" in your oil. Fix it right the first time and you will get many more miles out of your Explorer.

Congratulation on passing the 100,000 mile mark!

I hate to say it, but I have the same problem and it is not as simple as just swapping them out. You almost have to remove your A/C system, and lots of other stuff just to get to them. I may take mine to a shop to get it done just so I don't have to worry about the A/C system since it is expensive to recharge.

It's a pain in the a** but is possible. You have to unbolt the ac compressor to remove the driver's side. You don't have to disconnect any lines for the ac, just move the compressor/lines out of the way. It took me about 2 hours but only cost $15 approx. in parts.
