i've got some noisy tappets/rocker arms and the oil additive so far has done nothing. i think i'm gonna take the valve covers off and adjust them and i'm wondering if anyone has some advice or tips about this before i do it. i know that i need new gaskets for it but what else do i need ?

thanks,

Try changing your oil. I had a 65 Mustang that would get noisy lifters whenever it needed an oil change. Fresh oil would clear the problem right up. Your lifters are hydraulic and shouldn't need to be adjusted. It's a sucky job too. Good luck

just did the oil acctually, still noisy. i may not mess with it once i get the cover off and see what all i have to do.

There is no adjustment on the rockerarms..The 4.0 has a rail set-up.. the only option is to replace the warn parts..This can be a big job that requires pulling the intake and front off the engine..If it is a minor tap...live with it, if it is all of them makeing noise, take it to the shop and be prepared to shell out some big bucks..remember, if the rocker is worn, then the rod is worn, then the lifter is worn, then the cam, then the bearings...This is not an easy fix item..Change the oil, with a high quality oil, good filter and maybe a quality additive..AAnd hope for the best..

I've had really good luck over the past 40 or so years with Marvel Mystery Oil. Add one quart in place of 1 quart of oil. It doesn't work over night but it will eventually clean up things in the engine and usually stop lifter noise. Try it you will like it!

i had the same problem about 2 months ago. but the problem was my number 5 piston head was half gone the top of the head look fine but when i pull the oil pan off. i had the some piston rings and alot of piston parts. becarefully you could end of blowing you heads and a $100 a peice for new ones ain't bad but the time involved in pulling the engine is to replace the the pistons.
