I have recently acquired a 1997 V8 AWD with only 29k miles on it, but it has sat idle on and off for months at a time. I changed the oil, and had the Brake fluid changed. Should I do the trans fluid and TX Case too? Anything else in particular I should be looking out for, or expecting problems with ? It does seem to run good, no engine lights.

You are a lucky guy---

I would change the trans fluid at this time, the diffs should be ok, if they have never been submerged.

My Mounty gave no trouble--up to 102 k-
That is when I started messing with things--but that is another story.

The only thing I can say is a common problem, is the EGR-exhaust manifold weakness, especially on the passenger side. Torquemonster headers fix this though--so don't worry, and drive it.

Yeah I am lucky. My father bought a new Nissan, and was gonna JUNK the Explorer! His ol lady told him to give it to me. And yep; I made a post yesterday about the EGR exhaust piping... you nailed that. It does have a leak. Im gonna hack job that with some exhaust tape; hopefully it'll hold.

Change the antifreeze too, just to be safe. The trans and t-case fluids should be fine, but check the level often. It's not as big of a concern with newer vehicles, but watch for leaks since some of the seals may have dried out. More then likely you'll be fine since the Explorer 5.0 uses mostly rubber gaskets instead of cork, but like I said, just watch.
