2017 Ford Explorer XLT
Like many others, my vent selection actuator never worked to warm my feet in my 2017 Explorer XLT. Now it has stopped working altogether. I viewed the excellent video on replacement for the 2015 Explorer. My question is...is it in the same location for the 2017 Explorer? I have noticed that my instrument cluster appears differently than the one in the video. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum.
You didn't say which trim you are comparing yours to, but I don't think it really matters. The Explorer underwent a refresh in 2016 but I'm not sure if that affected the HVAC system.

My 15 XLT was stuck on defrost for the last year i owned it. I watched a video on youtube, bought the actuator and it sat in my door shelf until it was time to sell. I removed the lower plastic, plastic around the steering column, around the cluster, then the cluster. All was non eventful. You can see the actuator and using the right angle extension and magnetic socket, you can unscrew the 3 bolts/screws. I had to pry it out with a screwdriver, but wasn't stuck real bad. I unplugged the actuator from underneath. I plugged in the new one and put it up where it fits. Since the actuator was stuck in the defrost mode. I had to turn on key and turn the system to defrost. This moved the splined shaft to the correct position to slide actuator in. Remember, spline goes in only 1 way and has to match up. Some people, tear the old actuator apart and remove the splined shaft and stick it in and manually turn it to match where the new actuator is positioned. Either way, hold your mouth right and it will take a few tries. Watch out, all the metal frame parts are super sharp and i had scrapes on my forearm. Overall, it wasn’t a bad job and should have done it sooner.

I was able to successfully repair mine. It took patience and the youtube videos. Defn worth doing yourself, as worst case you can just put the covers back on, and drive to the dealership.
