Many thanks for your site over the years. With it's help I have done the following modifications to our 98 Explorer;
2 Oil coolers in front of other rads.,
Disconnected the oil pipes from the water rad. and connected up with an oil hose;
Plugged water rad. holes;
Fitted hydraulic oil filter (lower micron) not engine oil filter on return pipe to gear box.

IN the gear box....
fitted new pressure control valve;
fitted new pressure relief valve;
Block open oil temp. thermo with 1/4 " nut;
fitted bonded gasket plate;
fitted 2 cast ali blocks (firm fit) in long oil channel to stop movement of sides breaking gaskets;

Reason for above mods , West.Oz is hot climate like south USA. also we tow heavy horse trailer long distances.
Gearbox has now done 250,000 Km without trouble. Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome.

Welcome. I assume there would be a lot of dusty roads to travel. How about an after market air filter that has a higher Micron count but keeps the same or more CFMs.
This should help keep the cylinder walls from getting all the abrasives between the rings and the walls.
On the subject of Heat.
Also I would wrap exhaust insulation around any part of the exhaust pipe that comes close to the tranny fluid pan. Heat is the worst enemy for trannys.
Relocate the oil filter from the hot engine block and move toward the front where it could be surrounded by the ambient air temp. Connected to the block is the worst place it could be mounted. On my truck it's mounted on sheet metal radiator support and then even cut an air hole in the metal to let the air strip the heat away from the cannister. I also went the extra mile and relocated the hot exhaust pipe further away from the tranny. The last thing I would do if in fact they even make one for your truck is to find tranny pan that has air ducts that allow air to pass through the pan to even further drop the fluid temps. All of the above I have done with astonishing lower engine and tranny temps. And I constantly monitor the readings with Auto meter guages which are Oil pressure/temp, water temp and tranny fluid temp.
Then added some electric cooling fans that I can turn on even when engine is not running. Ya, it's just that important.
