Is there anyway that I can install my sony xav-7w to where I can watch videos and play my ps2 while the car is moving? Is there something I have to install or anyway I can trick the unit into thinkin that It is in park??

I can't help with your question but I have one of my own. Is this for you to use or back seat passengers? If it's for you in the front, I wouldn't suggest it because there are enough distractions already. I'm not trying to be an ass, it's just that I was in a bad accident a few years ago because a woman wasn't paying attention.

For liability purposes, the manufacturers put in a circuit witha wire that must be hooked up to the parking brake in order for the monitor to operate. The obvious way around it is just to attacht he wire to a circuit that has power whent he ignition is "hot". That way the monitor can be used at any time.

If the monitor is going to be up front where you can see it, I suggest you DON'T use the monitor while driving. If a cop sees it, it's almost assuredly an instant ticket. If it is for the passenger, and is far enough from the driver it should be OK. Also, it's easy to get caught. At night, you can see someone with monitors in their car from a long distance, so a cop could easily see if there was a movie playing or somehting like that. Only a navigation system is acceptable.

This is for the passenger in front seat while playing the ps2, i already have a shroud made so that I cannot see it while driving, last thing I want to do is get into another wreck, had a bad one last year when it was wet out and a person in a pathfind came sliding across the median and totalled my 4runner.

Then all you need to do is to hook the parking brake wire to another circuit. The HU wiring harness is a good place to find one. It will have an "ignition hot" wire there. Use that one.

I would double check that before you hook the wire up to a "HOT" lead. The indash DVD players that I have installed have required me to tap off of the parking break switch wire, which is usually a grounding switch. I'm not sure on the set up on X's, but just check and see what the dvd player needs. Then run a wire to whatever it needs (ground or 12V) and hide a switch in series with this wire somewhere out of sight (like in the console or something). Then, leave the switch open when getting an inspection so that the unit won't play videos in drive. Close the switch when you want to use the video.

WARNING... this is most definately illegal, and no shop will be able to wire it like this, so don't go playing videos next to cops. The law states: if its within the visibility of the driver, its illegal while the vehicle is in motion

I've just heard you just ground the wire that normally goes to the parking break.

Just push your brake in ONE notch, they are usually so worn out it doesnt matter.

Chris

I agree with Chris, why not just put in the parking brake one notch? I know lots of Cheby drivers who do this to turn off their DRL.

Glad to hear that, just want people to be safe. :) With that, I hope you can figure out a way to make it work for you. It sounds like there is some good ideas here. Good luck!

With my Clarion and Panasonic screens the parking brake wire is a GROUNDED lead.

Grounded vs. Hot

Check your manuals first. Don't tell my wife I said this, but I think I was wrong.

I was speaking from memory, and way back when in-car monitors were practically unheard of, I beleive there was at least one that had the parking brake lead that went to the actually brake circuit, so that when the indicator light was on on the dash, the circuit was activated and you could watch the monitor.

anyway, just check to see what the manual says (+12V vs Grd).

Also, glad you do have saety as your first thought. No offense meant Defaiantguy, but "Screw the cops, you bought this monitor for you, not your passengers," is a pretty... immature (best word I could think of) way of thinking. Cops are smarter than that. If he sees you watching TV or playing a game, he won't be fooled by you switching it over quickly to an audio screen.

why a shroud? I say just have it up and switch it over to the CD/DVD audio/XM screen. Screw the cops, you bought this monitor for you, not your passengers.
This is quite possible the stupidest post I've read this year. What can you possibly need to watch while driving, except for the ROAD!?

Idiots not paying attention to driving are the ones who cause wrecks. By using a shroud, he is making sure he does not become one of you.

Yep, thats how I thought to do that, plus that way its legal if the cops talk to you about it.

Chris

Anyhow, no matter how he dicides to do it, he's already taken the responsible route and said that he has a shroud on the monitor to prevent it from being seen by the driver when driving. Shouldn't be any problem at all legally.

ive seen plenty of people with their passengers playin ps2 or watching a dvd on a flip out tv...and theirs was installed by a shop

I hooked mine up so that I could have the screen function with out the parking break on. On the Kenwood KVT, I just grounded the wire to the headunit ground. Works great!
