walker exhaust?

one of the muffler that the one exhaust shop i talked to today said he mostly deals with walker mufflers - anyone know anything about them? high quality, low quality? loud or quiet?

im also possibly considering the magnaflow system, on alec's recommendation, but after i read his thread about having to install 2 resonators on there, im not sure if i wanna do that - plus, after all that, i might not like it.

Walker is the muffler that most muffler shops (at least in my area (Chicago)) use as the replacement for Explorers. I have a '94 with only the one muffler (screw the second one :) ). I go through mufflers about once every 18 months. I don't know if that is average or not, but they rust through pretty quick with the winters here. I think I am gonna get lucky this year and make it until next summer before I have to replace it. Whoo Hoo...


All in all it is just a muffler, nothing fancy. I think they may come with a lifetime warranty though. Check with the shop that does the work or the parts store you get it from.

well, i was talking to him about cat back setups, and he said he deals with walker a lot, i think hes an authorized dealer.

youre saying its just a regular muffler? theres no higher flow rate or anything? how does it sound?...quiet as stock?

also, i looked on the walker exhaust website, and they dont list anything for the sohc engine, so i guess i might be SOL on this one.
 






Yup, just a regular old muffler. Nothing special. Not louder or anything. Although, when it gets a small hole in it, it makes the truck sound like an old beetle sort of. That putt, putt, putt. I think that Walker may make Gibson exhausts, but I am no where near sure about that, so don't quote me.

As far as I know they make OEM replacement parts. I don't see why you would need a special muffler for the SOHC engine, but I've always had the pushrod (OHV) so I don't know.

most likely its a straight stock replacement for the factory muffler. As for them not having one listed for the SOHC, I dont see why you cant just make any of the mufflers work. It might mean they dont have a bolt up kit.
 






i dont think walker makes gibson, they make dynomax.

the sohc needs a dual in, single out muffler, isnt the ohv single in, single in?
 






Yeah, the OHV muffler is a single in, single out with an offset of about an inch or two. I didn't know the SOHC was dual in. I think you are right about the Dynomax thing too. I knew that they made one of the two :)

BigDave is right. Walker is pretty much the norm for replacement mufflers in shops. About offering a cat-back, I am sure they don't, they pretty much only deal in replacement mufflers for shops. Now, this is by no means to say that they are bad. If your are having it done at shop, they should be able to create a cat-back in any size you want. They can also hook you up with a bigger pipe size muffler which would be a little more free flowing than stock. And also, a lot of the nice low tone of aftermarket exhausts comes from bigger pipes out the rear, not the muffler itself. The shop should also give you a lifetime warranty on parts.

thats not a bad idea at all. maybe just get a walker muffler, with 2.25" pipes, that way it would a lil freer, might sound a lil better, but it wouldnt make so much damn noise that id get annoyed with it.

im also researching gibson exhaust right now. i saw someone else posted that gibson is pretty quiet on his 5.0, but it resonates, so i dont know about that.
 






A v-6 exhaust is not going to resonate like an 8 will. Although there is no better sound in the world than a tuned V-8 exhaust system :D :bounce: (insert Tim Allen grunt here)...

Jsut my two cents, but if you are looking to stay quiet, but get better flow, I think that larger diameter pipes and stock muffler (of the larger diameter) would work, but I am not an exhaust specialist. I should probably stop spouting off about stuff I don't know much about and let someone that does know answer :).

You will not need resonators. My exhaust system flows much more air than stock and has almost nil backpressure. It's 3" all the way to a 2.5" tailpipe. Also, the gear whine from the s/c resonates through the exhaust. With a moderate catback, you will not have any sound issues. If your exhaust is 2.5" all the way back rather than 3" like mine you'll be just fine.
 






I ran a Walker DynoMax turbo muffler on my '89 Ranger with 2.25 pipes from the cat back. It woke the 2.9L up like you would not believe. Quiet on the road but opened up it had a great sound.

That system went through more abuse than should be expected from a normal vehicle and when I finally got rid of the truck the muffler had no rust on it after about 6 years.
