I just picked up my new 2004 Explorer XLT with the 4.6 V8. Owners manual says to use synthetic motor oil. Is this a must? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Synthetic motor oil is always a good move. What weight oil does the manual say to use?

I too recomend using synthetic

I have used synthetic in alot of my vehicles. Corvettes come standard from the factory with mobil 1 synthetic, cause it helps lubricate the internals better and causes less wear than regular oil.

Many newer engines are specifying synthetics due to the VCT. The cam phasers are very sensitive to deposits and will not operate correctly unless they are kept totally clean. Use the synthetic but do not extend intervals to the point of varnish build up in the engine.

Ford also used synthetic from the factory to slightly boost their fleet MPG I'd assume. Just like they are starting to use 5-20 for their non synthetic.

I have been using synthetic oil on all my cars and trunks since the very first oil change, old or new. I do all my oil changes since new. No engine troubles on any one of my fleets. The oldest one had 278,000km on it
