have you tried fordparts.com they may have it

great advice, they seem to have it, even though can't match it by part number. but i could drill down using the schematics and it's there!

i wait until monday/tuesday, the dealer told me friday they were able to order it and should be here very soon. if they screw up again, i'll get these.

I'm happy to report that after 3 frustrating weeks I picked up my X tonight. They replaced pretty much everything related to the rear axle (so they say).
It was already dark so I was not able to take a close look but will take some photos tomorrow. The whine is almost entirely gone; I can still hear a bit of it, not sure where it's coming from.
Maybe I got used to the loaner too much (I had the time!) or they reduced the tire pressure but my power steering feels harder than before.

anyway, it feels good to be "home" again
