Hey Guys,
This is my first time here, I just read the thread "Engine Won't Start, Fuel Pump Relay? from Badge49/03-01-2008, 12:29 PM . I am having a similar problem with my son's 96 XLT. He called me from the mall where he is broke down and said he has plenty of cranking battery power and is turning over good but it will not start. We have already reset the shutoff switch and checked the fuses and relays, al good. How do i check to see if it is the Crank Position Sensor like in the article. Does anyone out there have any other thoughts on what might be wrong.

Clean CKP sensor connection

If you think your CKP sensor may be faulty you might try disconnecting and reconnecting the electrical connector to it a few times. That cleans the contacts. Also, some members have tapped the sensor and it started working.

You may want to look at my Engine No Start Procedure

Thanks this is good stuff, It is to late for tonight to try be I will be trying this first thing in the morning. I'll post the outcome.

What we do is take a hammer with you and tap on the gas tank anround the spot where the fuel pump is. Also since it is older have you ever changed the fuel filter. I know it may seem stupid but I see these get so clogeged it will not start. Also if you dont want to hit the fuel pump discont the line aove the filter that goes to the motor and cycle the key to on and off and look for fuel. I am almost positive that the crank sensors in these exs will still allow the motor to turn over.

I will try taking the line loose at the filter, I'm not comfortable hitting the fuel tank. thanks

It was the fuel pump, I found the procedure to drop the gas tank and change the pump, Thanks.

you make the hammer method sound so polite, I know I'll beat the snot out a tank with a dead blow if it keeps me from having to push a vehicle into the shop. Never once hurt a tank.
