Hello,
We have just got an Explorer and are luvin it.

Today I am going to replace the washer pump and order it... The problem is this. According to Ford the VIN date of manufacture is 02/06/1997 and the bloke at Fords states it is now an obsolete part.

It is this what I have removed
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=386303

But this is stated as a 1998-2001 model...

So, is ourt Ex made from the parts bin?:p:

hi the one you show is from a 1998 onwards explorer the one pump does the front and rear washers. on a 79 it should have two pumps one on the front washer bottle and one on rear washer bottle which is located in left hand rear compartment were the jack is stored. hope this helps .cheers chris

Thanks for your reply...

It seems a bit odd that the washer pump is off a 98+ model. Would someone of swapped out a 97 pump and setup for a later model?

I am sure mine is an early model as the brake light bulbs are of the bayonet type... Is this correct?

Anyway, love her as she is coz she is a beast :D

have you seen your front pump has it go two outlet pipes and are they both connected its possible someone couldn't get the wright one and used the later type with one outlet blocked off . cheers chris

The way to tell which type you have is to look at the hatch. If you have a twist handle to open it then you have a 97. If the number plate is in the centre and you pull a lever to open it then you have a later one. There are other subtle differences like the rear light clusters, washer bottle in rear, high brake light to name a few. The radio console is also a single din for the early ones with a clock. The later ones have a 1.75 din and no clock. Hope that helps.

Thanks Chris, There are two outlets and both were connected, but there is a chance that these could be commond up further down for just the front screen. The rear doesn’t work either, but after reading threads about failing washer pumps, I just presumed that it has one pump for the front and rear. The wife is causing devastation on the M4 right now, but when she returns, I will check it out.

Howard, yes, the rear hatch handle is a twisty type, I think clock-wise for hatch and anti-clock-wise for boot release, and has a single Din Ford radio fitted. Again, thanks for the advice...

Hi all,

Just to clarify (or confuse) the 1997 model year started off with two pumps and then changed to one pump halfway through production. This happened before the change to '98 model year.

o.k. if you open the tail gate and above the n/s rear light there's a filler for a washer bottle you should have two separate pumps one in the rear washer bottle and one in front washer bottle . if you don't have the rear filler the front bottle dose both front and rear and should have one pump with two outlets.cheers chris

Just had a look and there is no washer filler on the rear.

o.k then you will need the two outlet type at the front then .cheers chris

Welcome Booke.
Have you put a meter on the pump to verify it has power to it when button pushed?
Not saying the pump can't be bad just thinkin about due dilligence before spending money on a pump where it might be the relay or fuse.
Lets have some pics of the old girl to. (and i mean the car not your M4 terrorising mrs)
Regards

Yes, I am getting 12 Vdc indicating on the DVM... I stripped the pump down and sussed the graphite bush on one side is kaput. Looking on fleaBay and sizing it up it looks close to a Mondeo/Feista-ish type. However, I have a shed full of 'nearly-fit-bits so I may, for once, do it properly :D

I will get some photos of her up later...

hi if you want a good shecond hand one i can do one for £8.00 inc P&P. cheers chris

Well I got one today and fitted it. Aprt from the hoses around the wrong way, it works well  :D

But thanks for the offer...
