Recently, I made the first audio mods to my ride--as recommended by a audio shop owner. At that point I really didnt want to spend a whole lot so this was the hook up:
rockford 10" he in bandpass
alpine 5 channel amp
alpine tweeters

The stock HU and speakers remained as they were powered by the amp. Now Im looking to replace the front stock speakers with something like MB quart or infinity coaxials. However, im wondering if its overkill to have the tweeters from a coaxial in addition to the tweeters that i already have instaled in my x. I thinking I should have installed a good matching component system (or whatever you call it) in the first time, but oh well, always 20/20 in hindsight.

Anyways, if anyone has any cool ideas about replacing the front door speakers while keeping my tweeters intact, I'd greatly appreciate it. If not I guess ill have to fork out the cheese and go with a nice component system hookup

Of secondary concern, Im going to be replacing the stock HU. looking at Nakamichi, Alpine, Pioneer. Id go with Nak but I hear that they have problems playing CD-R's. Anyways is it redundant to have a nice HU with the 5 channel amp? Any info appreciated

It is absolutely not redundant to have a nice HU with your 5-channel amp. In fact, they will complement each other very nicely. I have heard great things about the Nak 45-Z in terms of sound quality, but not-so-great things about their reliability. And I have heard they sometimes have trouble reading CD-Rs. I'd say an Alpine is a better choice over a Pioneer.

As for the speakers, yes, a matched component speaker system would be your best choice. However, you can pick up a pair of mids and have a custom crossover built to match them to your Alpine tweeter.

or you could continue to run the tweeters of the amp and get some low-mid range speakers and run em of another 4 channel amp. or of the HU if it has enough power. on the other hand that might be overkill

I think im going to go with a whole new component system--something like the JL audio VR (5 1/4 inch) for $250 installed. Does anyone know if 6 1/2 component speakers can fit in the front door spaces without making any cuts.

Those alpine tweets that I already have are just going be sitting up there as decoration--nice and pretty ;) Or if I take em out what can I do to cover up the holes?

Now that my speakers are chosen, the HU decision is next. Something that shoots out at least 4 volts to the amp. The shop Im wanting to go through doesnt have the pioneer deh-p7300 I want. They carry eclipse, fosgate, sony, alpine and I think kenwood.

Man, I am spending way too much time online researching this stuff:D

Yes, 6.5s will fit in the door. You can either buy adapter plates or make your own out of MDF (that's what I did), but you won't need to cut any sheet metal. As for the tweets, why not install the tweets from the new component system where your Alpines are now?

I'd personally recommend Eclipse for a head unit. Their new line looks really sweet.

Thanks Mike. I just might do that (put the new tweets in the old tweeter holes). The only problem, minor as it is, is that they are way up high reflecting on the windshield. I kinda prefer them to be in close proximity to the midrange stuff. But not too big of a deal.
