If you had the selector in the defrost or defrost/heat position, the A/C compressor will still run, regardless of whether you have the button pressed or not.
Where you described the water leaking is exactly where the air conditioner drain tube is located.
I wouldn't worry about it. Perfectly normal. Sometimes even when the A/C is off, there's enough of a difference in temperature from the air to the condensor and it attracts a little water, just like a cold soda can will do on a hot humid day. This water will drain off thru the tube as it's designed to.
