take the plugs out and turn it over by hand to get all the water out of the cylinders, cahnge the oil and all fluids. replace air filter and spark plugs and then see if she will start.

reset the battery while doing this.....
plan ot change the oil again soon if it does run.
Usually if you didnt keep cranking it once it stopped you MIGHT be okay.

with 410fortune's advice I'm going to continue my questions all in this thread.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132148
So now the question is when you're manually turning the engine over and it gets to TDC, will it spring back if you don't turn it far enough? Or will it stay where it is?

I know that this is kind of a confusing question, but my brain doesn't know how to explain it properly. I hope all you experts can figure out what I mean.

Thanks, Matt

it should stay where it's turned to. I am not sure if on your crankshaft balancer that you have a tooth/notch or actual degree markings - but you should be able to set it on the tooth or 0-10 degrees! Good luck

Sounds like you might be trying to compress some water.

You have all 6 plugs out?

positive all plugs are out. I can only turn the crankshaft about 1/6th around at a time. there isn't any more room to move the wrench. I'm going back outside to work and I'll let you all know if I find out anything else new.

Ok, I figured out that I'm just dumb. It always helps to take your truck out of gear before you try to turn the crankshaft.

So I guess that I don't have a bent rod now.

I guess now it's just taking it apart and cleaning it. Lots of cleaning.

change the fluids then drive it then change the fluids again.
This is a stick correct?

You should plan on replacingt he front and rear diff fluids, trans and T case fluids and the engine oil if it sat in water for too long.

Cleaning the interior you mean? Oh boy...I hate deep water, never go first thats my motto :)

LOL!!! I just posted in the other thread. Never even thought of the tranny LOL!!!

Get 'er dun ASAP! Don't let it sit with moisture in it!!

-Joe

The breather line i had on my tranny broke and water got into it, no idea how long it had been broken. I changed the fluid and there was shrapnel all in the bottom of the pan and the fluid was dark and milky. Put new fluid in and a good additive (lucas transfix) and the next week, clunk, it dies.

metal in pan = ut oh.

the stock metal breather lines have holes in them :), me no likey stock breather lines........

the replacement tranny from the other explorer had no metal shards in the pan, and the fluid was almost like new, even after sitting 2 years! Hopefully this one goes well.

I just put a clutch in last week. The fluid in the tranny was still looking brand new. It's almost a shame that I have to replace it again. But it's very good that I checked. The fluid I took out last night looked like hershey's chocolate syrup.

I also figured out why my starter wouldn't turn the engine. I cleaned off the outside but the inside of the starter was completely caked with mud. I had previously thought that the starter was sealed(except for the actual popping out gear thing). I'm rebuilding that also.

Nice wiring connection Ford used on that starter eh? Little male slip on connector....that sucker gave me so many problems, I ditched it years ago, starter is soldered on each and every time I remove it.

That starter can take some abuse from mud and water, I can attest to that, sealed or not.

PLan to change the fluids again shorty, especially the transmission. Cheapest insurance you can buy for an auto is to make sure you have good clean fluid in there, and after you pulled water from it, you will want to flush again....

I figured out today that my starter doesn't work all anymore. I must have fried something in the coil windings cause now it won't do anything. I guess that much mud can do a lot of damage. A remanufactured starter is $100!!! That sure is a lot of money to spend when I'm not sure if this truck will even make another month or two after hydrolock. I guess that's just what I have to find out.

I now have installed the new starter. The motor still turns over as smooth as it ever did. I did a compression check to verify whether or not I had a bent rod. The compression was as follows:

1: 110
2: 150
3: 115
4: 140
5: 110
6: 110

As far as I have figured out, I'm guessing that everything is still fine. I heard that all cylinders should have a variance of no more than 75% between the lowest and highest readings. I also heard that if a cylinder has a much higher reading(as in 2 and 4 in my case) that's a result of carbon or some other kind of buildup.

compression readings

All the service departments at the dealerships in my time zone have closed. So I called one in denver and found out some interesting information.

The very nice gentleman that helped me said that most cars come from the factory with compression readings between 100 and 150 psi. He said that as long as your above 100psi, then everything should be fine. (of course there are exceptions to everything)

He then said that a cylinder that has a much higher reading usually has a some kind of buildup or maybe some excess oil (or in my case WD-40) that causes higher compression.

Two adjacent cylinders that have readings 20psi or lower than the other cylinders usually means a bad head gasket.

A cylinder that pumps up slowly and stays low can mean the piston rings are bad.

If the compression is low on the first stroke and does not increase on following strokes, leaking valves is the problem.

I hope that this information is correct and helpful. I would hate to get anyone screwed up.

It's all back together again.

So the x is all put back together. I put in a couple quarts of new oil and some engine flush stuff and and she started right up. But then idled like crap. I was so scared, after spending $250 on new clean stuff, I would be really mad if something was really wrong. It took me a while to realize that I had the spark plug wires on in the wrong order. OOPS! Well I got those back in the right place (thanks to our wonderful search engine on here) and after that she ran ok. Not as good as she used to, but I haven't put any sea foam in yet. Checker was all sold out and is prolly not even going to carry it any more. I'll have to find some other place that carries it, and then, maybe, hopefully, she will be running well again.

Wish me luck,
Matt

Carquest carries sea foam, or they used to, been a while sense I went there, I use Run Rite / Zoom II on my X (93 4.0) and she runs like a champ, you can get it at a oil and lube shop....
