Water temp sender

Anyone know how to check the temperature sending unit? My dash guage reads almost on the cold outer bar almost all the time, but the engine seems to be reaching the right temp. I'd like to know whether it is the sender or the guage before I go buy whatever is needed.

Could have a stuck open thermostat, I did. To test the sender, ground its wire. If the needle hits the peg then the gauge is good but the sender may be bad. If not, the gauge is bad or the wire is, but you can't rule out the thermostat.
