Hi there, I will try to explain this the best way I can being that I do not know a lot about cars! I bought an 06 Explorer, Ed.B, 4.6L V8 just less than a month ago. When I was taking it to get a buyer inspection, at the light to pull into the shop, the truck began shaking badly! I was a bit panicked as I have had nothing but problems with my previous truck (suburban). So the guy at my shop automatically said it is a bad coil. I took it to the car lot and they moved some things around and it was fine. I then went through a car wash a few days later and the moment I pulled out the car was back to shaking... Took it back to the lot and he said water somehow got into the coil (4th cylinder). The lot has since checked, all plugs and coils are working properly, but somehow water or fluid is getting in #4 and they can't figure out how or why. I live in Washington state and I can't avoid water with all this rain so I am hoping there is someone else that may have a similar issue or may know why this is happening. My car lot is trying to get a hold of "The Leak Doctor". The other issue I have noticed is a light aroma of coolant when I have the window down and the AC on. Got an oil change and they tested the radiator pressure, said it was perfect. I also feel a slight sputter when I level out at a steady speed of 35-45 MPH (Kinda feels like the bumps when you cross the center line) but stops after 1 or 2 seconds. My shop still believes it is a coil or a cracked boot but has not even checked, I don't want to pay a bunch of money for work that isn't needed.

There is evidence that water is dripping thru the clip holes in the cowl tray above the rear plugs. I would suspect that this might be your issue. The cowl tray clips snaps into holes in the gutter that runs from left to right. You might run a hose on the windshield, with the hood open, and watch to see if that is happening.

If so, you can push some kind of sealant into the clip hole before you snap the tray clip back down into it.
