So, I've had my '05 for about 6 months now, and I'm just now getting to the tune up. I know, about 6 months over due.

Anyway, due to time constraints, I was only able to do the drivers side today. There needs to be more hours in the weekend 😩

Anyway, these are the three I pulled. Left to right are plugs 4,5, and 6.

Now, I admit to not knowing much about ignition systems, but would the condition of those tips be the cause of poor mileage?

Also, while I'm glad they're not oily, other than the tips, are they normal? If not, what should I look for and how to, possibly, correct it?

Thanks in advance.

The only one that looks concerning is number six. Would suggest burning of oil fuel, additives, or poor fuel.

What are they currently gapped at? That will tell you if they are costing you MPG‘s.

.063

Seeing as that is within the range that Haynes and the shop manual calls for, am I correct in assuming that is not the cause of poor mileage?

What are your avg MPG’s?

When my wife drives her 05, she gets 13 miles per gallon. When I drive it I get 17.

Looks like theres deposits. I agree with NumberFour burning a little oil

It can be part of the cause. But that suggests theres an underlying problem changing plugs might mask but wont cure the root cause.

If only! I drive like grandma going to church (Im the one people always get stuck behind when I accelerate hehe Im quick once Im up to speed though) and I get 10 citt 15 hwy I think its the offrosd gear though I thinm I used to get better mpgs

I'm currently getting about 13.5 right now. I too am the one people hate to be stuck behind. Sadly, the '96 F250 I used to have got better mileage than I'm getting now.

Getting ready to do mine @85K on my 4.6. Have the coils & plugs. I'm so looking forward to the back ones

So, on Saturday, I was able to get to the other three plugs. Tried to get the wires as well, but it looks like, and hopefully I'm wrong, I have to remove a coolant line to remove them and the holder they're in at the front of the valve cover.

So, I have 3/4 of a tune up done. If I have to remove the coolant line, I'm waiting for warmer weather 😤 The Explorer is running better now, so I'm not too worried about not getting the last 3 wires.

The other plugs were in bad shape as well. 2 of them had damaged tips, I probably said the wrong name. They do not look like mechanical damage, more like they were worn a bit. I'll post pics when I can take them.
