Weird electrical conundrum

Ok so I have a 1992 ford explorer and here is my problem. A week ago my starter solenoid went out, replaced it and it started right up. Well after I replaced it the following happened:
1. There is no more click coming from the starter relay on the fender. It used to click on when i would turn the key to the on position.
2. When I turn the key to the on position I cannot hear the fuel pump pressurize like it used to.
3. When i start the car it catches on the first turn, it used to crank 4 times before catching.
4. When I shut the car off it likes to diesel, it will do this for up to 30 seconds.
5. The battery drains overnight, but the battery is good. I can use it in my other car no problem.

All of this makes me think that the fuel pump does not shut off correctly. But I have no idea how that could happen. Any advice?

Sounds like when you turn the key off it is not actually OFF.

Ignition switch is likely the bad guy.

The dash lights go out though, would this still be my culprit?
 






Check the fuel pump relay, perhaps it has failed and stuck in the closed circuit position. Try swapping another relay in its place and see what happens, or testing the relay with a multimeter.

Also when plugging a relay into the fuel pump relay socket - if, with the truck off and key off, the relay clicks once when its pins touch the contacts, something is providing power to energize that relay when it shouldn't be.

Where is the fuel pump relay located?
 






Under the hood in the power distribution box, which is attached near the inside of the passenger fender. On the 93-94 models the box is labeled with the relay functions, but on a 91-92 you might have to consult the owners manual to tell which is which if it's not labeled.
 






If you have a digital multimeter (DMM) that has a 10 Amp or 20 Amp setting (you'll have to move one or both DMM probes to use it) you can connect it in series with the positive battery lead (with the ignition switch off, of course) and verify you do (or do not) have current flowing with the engine off. Then pull the various relays and/or fuses one at a time until the current drops to zero. Depending on the sensitivity (number of digits) on your DMM you may read a very low current - that's the holding current for the computer. Oh, when you lift the positive battery terminal you'll erase any stored trouble codes so if you need that information better get it before you start.
 






I got it! It was the fuel pump relay located under the fuse box.
