I have a 99 Explorer XLT .. today driving home back from NH I felt something not quiet right underneath me. I could feel a slight kick every so often, and then it became very noticable. The weather was bad so I put it in cruise control, when I accelerated the engine would kick and the RPMs wouldnt go any where, shortly after my CL light came on.. its kind of late and dark out to be checking things out.. I am going to run the codes tomarrow. After getting off the highway I pulled into a gas station to check things out, everything seemed normal however I didnt check the oil because it was rainy and dark out. It made its way home pretty normally without any sort of kicking. Any ideas? :(:(

You said not quite right "underneath you" ? Maybe its not the engine? My mother inlaw described the same complaint to me with her 99 explorer but I couldnt get it to repeat.

Few weeks later I was headed to pick her up with the car trailer and it was the transfer case. The high/low collar and input shaft had stripped due to the slop in the shift fork and shift drum.

Rebuilt the case and got her back on the road.
