Recently I started hearing a strange noise coming from either the engine or transmission on my 2003 explorer AWD. It used to not happen very often but now I hear it everytime I drive plus the check engine light turned on. With the help from a buddy we concluded that the noise is in fact coming from the intake. I have a K&N filter and this had never happened before.

Attached is a video of the sound. I have no idea what can cause this problem. HELP! The truck is a 4.6 v8 with roughly 120k miles.

AHAH! Someone else with the fabled 'Gurgeling' :D

My explorer has been doing that since the day I bought it. At first, it was once in a great while, now it's almost perpetual. I don't have any codes, and the whole thing still runs like a dream, but my God is it annoying as hell. I've only got 99K on my vehicle.

It reminds me of some idiot goat baa-ing inside my engine every time I try and pull up somewhere to look cool.

It's actually the first thing I'm planning on getting to the bottom of during the warm weather. I'm about sick of it now.

I recall years ago reading something about it not being bad, just annoying, and some kind of valve deep down needs to be replaced to fix it.

I would be thrilled if someone chimed in to a solid answer. Maybe I missed something years ago?

Hmmm this got me thinking that maybe my check engine light might not be caused by this annoying gurgling. Well the first thing and easiest thing to start with is the pcv valve. This may be an option but after that I'm not sure where i would go after. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some information.:help:

I'll be keeping an eye on this in case a solution ever comes out. Otherwise, I'll be sure to message you when the winter is through and I've figured it all out.

Thanks a lot! If I figure anything out I'll be sure to post a follow up.

Holy crap I have the same problem. It happens with mine too but is exponentially louder. My intake is completely different than any of yours, and I no longer have a PCV or EGR system so those can be ruled out. Going to clean my K&N and see if that helps. My IAC valve is going bad as well so that may be an issue for me. My best guess though is a vacuum line issue. Maybe a leak somewhere? It's still warm here in FL so I'll get on it now. It's annoying me too.

Just for giggles, unplug the iac and see if the noise changes or stops.

It's not predictable enough to do that. By the time I got out and popped the hood it will have stopped.

Not sure if it's the same issue ,but my 4.0 ohv made a horrible noise when it was warm out comming from the intake,it was the iac.

I just bought the PCV today I'm going to change it Friday. If the noise continues I'm going to try the IAC next since that's what seemed to help others. Appreciate all the help guys!

BTW if you hear the video with headphones it will be a lot clearer...

Thanks for doing this work. It will save quite a few of us a lot of potential legwork. Standing by for results within the coming days.

Like I said I don't have a PCV or EGR system at all and I have the noise, so I don't think that's going to solve the problem. But I guess it's worth replacing to try.

I agree, however I still am happy to see someone tinker around with a problem I'm sharing. Perhaps he'll stumble upon something.

It could be the muffler bearings???...lol...

I seem to recall back in the day there being a TSB for that... Someone that still works for FMC could look it up...

I'd be interesting in learning more about that ^^^

What the chit is a muffler bearing? This sound most definitely comes from the intake.

Muffler bearing is same thing as blinker fluid or the animal known as a Snipe. Ever been on a snipe hunt? ;)
