weird shocks in the back...

i've got some rear shocks, that level the car after loading heavy in the back. (some sort of pneumatic device)
is this normal on explorers?
can i still do the shackle lift?
should i just get new shocks?

just realised it when sitting in the cargo area for a while - brrrrrrrrt
any ideas?

you have the air ride shocks... if you replace them, you will get an annoying air shock light on the dash.... you can replace them though..... and put in regular shocks and lift it.... its just that light on the dash will say there is a malfunction unless you are able to disarm the whole system for the autoleveling

I believe there is a switch in the rear passenger compartment where you can disable the air ride system. I'm not sure that will get rid of the dash light though.

If you turn the airride system off with that switch and replace your shocks then the light should not come on.

There is also a way of fooling the system to always go to the highest setting, giving you about 2-3" of permanent lift as long as you keep the system installed.

alec, you wouldn't know how to fool the system for 2" do you?
figured that might go good with those war shackles.
(or homemade shackles if i can't get the war 153s here in sweden)

this might be the cheapest 2"lift in history tt+air ride fix.
oh yeah, don't get me wrong. i'm planning bodylift also...

You have the same as me. And yes you can lift the rear and keep the self leveling function. Just in front of the dif is the height sensor just move the sensor down when you lift the rear. You might have to extend the little bracket that it sits in but meccano is wonderful at that sort of thing. I think they put this rear only air shock system on all the RHD export models. All the best.


PS If you force the lift you will ofcourse be running the rear shocks at a higher than normal pressure all the time. This might lead to some probs but if you move the sensor to compensate for the lift then you should be ok. (harder ride as well)
