Weird volume control, non-working sub

Ok, I think this is probably a simple question after looking around this board but oh well. I have a 95 with the JBL Audiophile system and... it sounds like crap. The volume increases reallllllyyy slowly, the sub doesn't even work, or at least no sound comes out, and the sound quality is shallow in general. I was wondering if any of this is fixable and whether I should just replace the whole system or what. After looking at your reference page on audio, I figured the system should sound good, but maybe that's just how it sounds. Any help would be appreciated.

Well for a start, do a " self test " turn your radio on and set a normal volume level. Press 6 & 3 at the same time ( hold for about two or three seconds ) the radio will play through one speaker at a time including your sub.
That is the quick and easy.
As far as the volume, I have no clue. I have never heard such a problem.
I am sure some one will come along with more info than me.
