The good = Locked rear end and equal traction to both tires.

The bad = Stock axles aren't well suited to a fully locked rear for extended periods.

The ugly = You bust an axle shaft and it ruins you day...

I wouldn't even consider it for street use, offroad only.

Thanks, that sounds like some useful information. This is a daily driver so I'll end up saving for a lunchbox.

The aussie is only $240 or something.
Wait, why are you posting this in the sport trac section anyway?..
Noooo way would I weld the rear end of an IRS!

Do you have a direct link to an aussie for my rear end for 240? All I can find is a powertrax for 511 plus shipping.
The reason I'm posting here is I thought some of you sport trac guys might have experience with welding a rear end. I dont think anyone has welded or locked a 3rd gen yet. Just fishing for some advice from experience thats all

Sorry it was $260... http://www.offroadlockers.com/item.php/TMa83ba1/047e/06/306008/.html

Now I'm not familiar with the new IRS, but I've heard that it's the same 8.8 31 spline center section. Do not quote me on this though, I haven't researched at all, just what I've heard. I would contact Aussie to make sure it works in your rig. Also, lunchbox lockers like the aussie can only be installed in an open differential, in case you weren't aware of that. If you have a limited slip, the carrier would have to be replaced with an open carrier, which means taking it to a shop to make sure things get set up properly.

Thanks for that link. 260 sounds much better than 511. I do have a limited slip, so I would have to buy an open carrier first? How much, where? The powertrax for 511 is made for a limited slip maybe thats why its more.
I had a sport trac for 3 years, tt/shackles/3" BL with 33's. Miss it like crazy. Been looking at them at carmax.com and thinking of trading in for another.

Yes you would have to buy an open carrier. The powertrax you're looking at may be a full carrier replacement.
If you're serious about a sport trac I may be selling mine, set up nicely. I'm probably going to buy a newer F150 very soon. I almost traded the trac in a couple weeks ago, was driving to Indiana to do it (had been emailing their internet manager for a week), and he called me 30 minutes before I got there and said it sold :(
The only reason I haven't been trying to sell the trac on my own is because I don't have another vehicle to drive to work if I do sell it, the Jetta is my wife's car.

Sounds like a nice set up. Can you post pics, asking price? I was looking at trading so I didnt have to fool with selling my ride but who knows. Are the 488's kinda low for 33's?

That's how I've been feeling. I can't really afford to buy a new rig and make two payments until the sport trac sells, or I don't want to atleast...
Let me send you a PM... Give me a few minutes here...
