its been a while since ive had an explorer but i need a winter ride and i figure why not complete the set (ive had a second and third gen). im going to look at 94 tomorrow. it has 120k on it, and it looks really nice. hes asking 16 but ive already talked him down to 1400 and ill bet ill get it for less. but anyway i was wondering if anybody knows of any common problems that i should look out for.

If it is 4wd check operation of the hubs. Check the condition of the transmission fluid since the trannies are weak. TPS isn't any bigger an issue on 1st gen explorers than any other ford vehicle. You will probably hear lifter chatter, pretty common on first gens. Otherwise, first gens are probably the most durable of the explorers.

Transmissions and the mystery coolant leak, caused by the intake manifold leaking internally. If you are just going to use it for a winter rat, have the tranny flushed and the fluids checked and drive it.

If the overflow tank goes down a little every month then it will probably be the intake leaking slightly, put some good stop leak in it and go on with it.All of this assumes it will just be a beater.:D

Make sure you drive it until it gets hot to test the tranny and to make sure it's not overheating.
