Approx. how many quarts of transmission fluid will I need for changing the fluid in a 5R55S, assuming I drain it from the plug in the bottom of the pan? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, you can barely get more than 2 quarts out. The plug is in an elevated post (not talking about the center allen). I believe this design is so the plug canleak and the vehicle still has enough fluid to prevent catastrophic damage. Dropping the pan gets another quart and a half out.

Since new fluid has to be pumped in anyway, You can overfill the transmission with about 3 extra quarts and run it at idle for a couple minutes and drain out the extra. That eliminates having to pull a cooler hose. Correct level is always set by having it level, up to temperature and draining excess from allen.

Thanks. Wow, 3 quarts....that's not much. Supposedly, the dry fill amount is almost 13 quarts. Not sure it's worth the effort. I'd be leaving 75% of the fluid in. What's the point?

I followed the exact procedure according to the service manual and the one stated above. I let the fluid drain out until a small trickle. I was on level ground when I did this. However, when I drove the truck, the transmission was slipping. It needed more transmission fluid. I could not let it drain to a trickle... It would be too much fluid release.

Why did this happen? I really have no way of knowing how much I added.

With the engine RUNNING and the car LEVEL the correct fill is when fluid just comes out of the small plug in the center of the large one.
