I am planning on getting the Alpine 15" sub, and was wonmdering what type of amp would be good. Any recommendations on brands and watts necessary would be great.

i think it all depends on how much the subwoofer is rated at.. like mine, i have to 12" at 250W a peice so i got a 500W amp... i personally like rockford fosgate but i heard xtant is good too...

i have 2 15s with near 500rms each from fosegate amp...expo5.0 has 15s with a 1501d...u gota be ALOT more specific. like maybe post specs of the sub u have? might make things a bit easier

Ones that come to mind are a HiFonics Brutus BX500, JBL PowerValve BP-600.1, MTX Audio Thunder801D (at 4 ohms), Avionixx AXA 600.4, Tsunami DB1100 (Kinda overkill at 1100 w RMS @ 1 ohm, but still only $220!), and A Phoenix Gold 500.2

That should get you started ;)

my friend has 2 of those 15" Type R's, he has it powered by a 1501d, i must say it sounds good, the the dang back window didnt move in and out and the cab rattle :fire:

Is that MTX?

OK, here's another question, given the watts of the sub, what is the least watts I should get in an amp for it?

Alpine suggests getting the Alpine MRD 500 amp. I have 2 of those amps. Great amps. Get 1 and it will push that sub till the cows come home and you will be happy you did.

Those subs are NOT very sensitive (86db) and the manufacturer reccomends at LEAST 200watts RMS (100watts per coil).

Do I absolutely need to buy a seperate amp for the sub? Or would it run off my 4 channel MTZ I have now?

Whats the RMS wattage of your current amp?

Yea, id go with the MTX THUNDER 1501D. Go to www.cmttrading.com and then go to amplifiers, then to mono block, then it should be the first amp on the second page for $359.00 . Ive bought from them before and they are pretty good(not scammin ya). good luck and have fun,.

I dunno if I would do that. The 1501D would only be good for that alpine if run at 4 ohms, which means it could be doing a lot more work. It is a good choice if he plans on getting another 15", but otherwise, it is money wasted. I would look at the 1 ohm ratings of amps and drop down that low with a 1 ohm stable amp rather than get a 500w @ 4 ohm amp that probably could do 1000+ watts.... which you don't need

Here's my current amp, its pretty old :P

Do you think i should just get a new 4 or 5 channel amp to power the whole thing, or should I use my current amp for the speakers, and get a mono channel amp for the 15"

that amp would not be a good choice either, same situation with making power at the wrong load.

you could consider a 502 mtx amp, please don't pay crutchfield's prices though
