I've read a lot of conflicting view points about whether to get 6x8s or 5.25 components..i listen to ONLY rap and r&b..so i want to have a lot of base..but i want the highs to equalize it u know what im saying? so would should i do?? it sounds like a good idea to get a component system in the front...so the tweeters and mids woould be in the front door..then what speakers should i get for the back door? also what subs and amps do u guys recommend? and what kind of head unit? i was thinking of going with the clarion..is this a good one? im kind of new at this..any help is greatly appreciated..thanx..btw i have a 93 XLT with a stock premium JBL system

Well everyone has a different opinion, so here is mine.
Clarion is a very good quality head unit with a great sound - the only downside is its low wattage output 14 x 4 (average) compared to Pioneer's 35 x 4 (average). In my opinion though, the 14 is more than enough and can be heard a pretty good distance away. The more wattage you play with, the greater the chance that in the future you will be saying frequently "excuse me, what did you say... can you speak up."

I am running 6 x 8s on all four doors, but recently I was discouraged at the explorer's horrible "front staging." The speakers are aimed at each other and once someone is sitting in the seat chances are that their leg is blocking the sound a bit. I solved this by purchasing a set of Rockford Fostgage Fanatic tweeters (angled type and can be moved around). I made cut outs on the top of the door where it is still flat (triangle shaped). The sound is a 100% improvement. The type of speakers can make a difference (component sets); however, the real difference is where the speakers are positioned. {PIONEER 6x8 TWO WAYS}

I am running Rockford Fostage 12" subs and provide a very nice rockin to the truck. They are tucked inside of a sealed Q-Logic box. You can go with 15"s if you want your bass felt ten cars back and to register on the richtor scale, but you will need lots of power. You can also try the box in the back cutout area (I have a Kicker Solo-Baric 10"); however, one woofer probably won't satisfy your hunger for serious bass. Good woofer brands are easy to come by RF, Kicker, Cerwin Vega, MTX just to name a few. It all depends what you want - If you want loud sound you could even try a kicker factory box with 2 - 12" woofers and two midranges (ported) - bass and sound.

Everyone will give you different opinions and the are all good. What you have to use is the amps RMS rated power per channel. If you run a 2ohm load, the power rating goes up. Also you should look for an amp that has a bass boost for your woofers. Don't go with a cheap amp - it will be your worst nightmare (cracking when bass hits hard and bass won't even hit that hard.) From my experiences Sherwoods are good for starters and those who have an average budget. I am currently running Crunch amps, but will be running two amps so I am switching to Rockford Fostages - very good.

This is all the time I have.

I listen to pretty much everything out there but tons of Rap and R&B. A while back I posted something about the "air space" inside the Explorer cab being optimum for quality sound reflection. In other words, you dont need much for a great sound! I run a Clarion 9475 Head Unit, 5.25 Polk's in all four doors, 1 phoenix gold competition series 12" sub and a phoenix gold 200x4 amplifier. My Explorer rocks! I could go balistic and get another amp for the front speakers and another for the rear doors and then add another sub, but why? I already turn the volume knob up half way and hear the sound clear down the street. I am considering adding a Clarion Video Screen with DVD Player and Sony Playstation, but I havent because of cash problems right now and I am not sure I wanna go that far. A friend of mine owns a stereo shop and wants me to go crazy and do competitions/shows, but if I do that I will have to invest much more into my Explorer.

Good luck on your choices! Remember, its all about quality NOT quantity!

jordan....
does ur system really BUMP? cuz thats what im looking for..it sounds like a good setup..u have no tweets though right? do they really make that much of a difference or should i just forget about them? also how much did u pay for everything and where did u get it all from? thanx

one more thing jordan..
r ur polks 2 ways? i would assume so cuz i don't know if i've heard of round 3 ways..but maybe they do exist..and whats the model number of them? thanx

last question jordan...
is ur sub in a box? if it is did it come in the box already? or did u make it? thanx

Well ijust upgraded my system(91 EB) with a $1500 upgrade. I have a Kenwood KDC-X711 cd player..tons of features and very good quality. The face revolves aroudn whenever you turn off the ignition so you don't have to carry the face around. For now i have left the door speakers be....they still give out great sound but are soon to be replaced by the new JBL Power 5x7 160w speakers. They sound very good. For woofers i went with 2 10 inch Kicker Comp in a band pass box. If you want real deep bass go with 12 or 15 inch. Just remember 10's hit harder than 12 or 15. So you will get what they call a tighter bass. Trust me...you can hear mine 10 cars down no prob. For power i went with a BOSS (same people who make US Acoustic) AVA-CLR90 5 channel amp. I power my door speakers and my sub with this. You will be amazed how much better the stock speakers sound with more power. Here are the specs on the AMP ---High Power Bridgable, 5 channel Mosfet amplifier, 150wx4 and 300wx1. 2 ohm stable, Dual high pass crossover, built in sub woofer crossover.--- The guys i had to mine are some real old school folks. They know there stuff and are very good friends of mine. Even all thme are impressed by my new sound machine. My words of advice on speakers and woofers avoid the expensives name i.e. Rockford Fosgate, Boston Acoustic...etc. Kicker was one of the first and still one of the best. I'll try to take some pics...although i have no way to scan them on maybe i can send them to Rick. If you have any questions as far as installation give me ring kellingda@hotmail.com I hope you enjoy your soon to be new sound!!

Daniel

Hello,

Yes, it BUMPS. I have the amp power on half to one quarter because with all the power I cannot hear myself think.

The polks are 2-way. The sub is in a single enclosed box with the face of it at a 45 degree angle facing the rear window in the trunk area. Remember one thing about upgrading stereo systems, your head unit makes a world of difference. CLARION CLARION CLARION has won the world title many many times for obvious reason, they kick ass!

heres my 2cents.
i have a single MTX blue thunder 12" sub running off an infinity beta 100 amp producing 400 watts at 4 ohms. i had to hook up an mtx crossover cuz the infinity doesn't have one built in. i feel i must rave about the infinity. it is ALL digital. incredibly efficient. doesn't even need a fan because of it being digital. this thing pounds. you can hear it up to a 1/4 mile away with te amp turned up HALF WAY. for tight bass, get a sealed enclosure. ported boxes are louder, but they give off a lot of echo, and have a very boooooooomy sound. its not tight. its up to you
i plan to get a good four channel, maybee one of the sonys that have super good crosovers built in to run infinity kappa 5x7 componentsin front and pioneer 6x8 3 ways in back. thats my ideal setup.

If you want a system that is going to thump. First get a new head unit and subs. Get an Alpine deck (great sound) and if money isn't an object get the JL w6's in a sealed enclosure. As for sound quaity with sub's 10's will give you the best (what I have) 12's still will sound good and give you the extra bass as for 15's they are just horrible. I have an Alpine deck with a 6-disk changer, Alpine Amp 600 Rms X 1 powering two JL W0's in a sealed encolsure. Stay away from Alpine sub's the suck but everything else they make is good. I also recomend the MTX Bluethunders. My friend has 2 12's in a sealed enclosure in a 98 civic with components and new 6X9's. You turn it up and you feel your hole body moving from the bass.

Hope this helps

Hey, I'm new to this site, but I couldn't help throwing my hat into this one. Think power, the most you can afford by a reputable manufacturer. I run a 4-channel for the stock doors, a 2-channel (bridged) to the 10" stealth enclosure and there is serious air being moved!! The 5.25 can sound just as good as 6x8 depending on who's you get (i.e boston accoustic, mbquartz) This can all be done without changing the head unit (if you're on a budget) if not change that too.

If all you want is bass, get an Alpine 1505 or 1005 (even the 1002 is nice) and tap into your factory wiring for the sound. Drive a pair or trio of JL 12W6s (sound great) and keep everything up front the same. Unless you have a cassette deck, that is. A CD player is required for good frequency response. I prefer Alpine or Eclipse, nothing can beat 'em. If you want full sound for highs and lows, it depends. For the rap, you won't really need a good set of tweets. The R&B will kind of depend on how picky you are over sound quality. You can get away with a set of 6x8 components up front if you can find a good high quality set. Most people don't notice the difference between a set of high quality co-axs and a set of components. I personally prefer the Dynaudio series 240 if you want REALLY good sound out of a 2 way set of components. If you go all out, check out the Dynaudio series 360 for a good set of 3 way components (7", 3", 1.1"). As for power, go with the best quality amp you can afford. The bigger name companies under-rate all the power levels, while the lower name companies will over-rate all the levels. I.E., my Alpine 1002 in my SHO is rated to put out 400RMSx1 at 12v, 600RMSx1 at 14.4v, and actually tests at 730RMSx1 at 14.4v. Don't skimp on the amps if you can help it!!
That's my .02 on it.

Hey Danny I got the Alpine 1005 I do agree its a great amp. Are those numbers true. That means I can destroy the 2 JL W0 10's I have.
