I don't use dishwasher parts to fix my refrigerator... therefore I like Motorcraft parts in my Ford.

I'm putting AutoLite copper cores in today. I'm new to the Explorer but have always had bad experiences using plat plugs in my own car so I decided to go for non plats for the Explorer as well.
 






Just got my original plugs/wires replaced with 93,000 miles on the truck. I stuck with the Motorcraft OEM plugs (AGSF22PPM if I remember right) and I went with Borg Warner wires. They have a lifetime warranty vs the 1 year warranty of Motorcrafts and I couldn't see any difference in their construction. Price was about $20 less also.
 






I'm sure that most ignition wires on the market are as good or better than Motorcraft wires, it's the plugs that I'd be more concerned about.

NoT to Hack this thread or nothing...BuT I just Bought my plugs and wires... I dont really trust People working on my truck But I noticed Cylinder 6... is right under my AC unit...and wires run in back of the upper manifold...seems kinda hard to do...any tips guides run throughs? thanks
 






autolite plugs and Car Quest wires

We picked up our " NEW " 1998 EX XLT SOHV 165KM on Friday, and the first thing I did on Tuesday after changing the air filter to a K&N was check the plugs, even though I was more then happy with the way it was running. As I suspected, the plugs were the origional Motorcraft, quite rusty around the outside, and about a 1/4 inch gap for the spark. The two I could get to were quite clean though. I lucked out finding a great shop close to where I got the truck. The place I got the truck turned out to be a place with a bunch of liers for saleman, but that is how I found this place.
In my past 98 EX I changed the plugs and wires at 165,000 as well, and put in Bosch Platanum and Motorcraft wires. Even at 230,000km, I still got 21 to 22 mpg hwy/city constantly, and ran great being a OHV engine. With this new truck, I checked the milage twice before changing air filter and plugs. I got 17.5 mpg the first fillup, and only 15 mpg the second fillup. Must add though, it has been -20 c here the last week. Where I took the truck for the tuneup, They suggested a brand new AC Delco line of Plananum and Delco wires for me to try. They said that they have been compared quite favorably to Bosch, and better then Motorcraft. They said to try for a month or so, and let them know. If I am not happy, they will put in whatever I want.
Just waiting for it to warm up so I can get an accurate assessment.

Different plugs for different cylinders

I read this entire thread and one thing I didn't notice is something I saw at work on our Snap-On Shop Key program. It says that according to Ford there a couple of different plugs to use on different cylinders for my 94. Anyone ever heard of that? It kind of struck me as strange as I've only heard of doing that in modified engines. Thanks!

I use BOSCH Platinum +4's and they last well over 30k miles!
 






I put in Bosch Platinums in my X. Just the single "prong" for me.

When I tookk out the +4's they were signs that they were running hotter than they should(what I've read about on other posts). Only had them in for 10K miles too. My xplorer has "trouble with hesitation and stumbling at low RPM's." and I have bosch +4's but I never attributed it to the plugs, my problem is only when I first start up the car after its already warm tho...I thought it was an EGR issue. Wonder if thats why I'm having this problem?

Modern spark plug wires are made of materials that they should not need replacing generally for their lifetime unless running problems exist. The older ones made of rubber coating tended to dry rot and crack and needed replacement much sooner.

I'm running new bosch plugs and wires though simply because a tune up was done in such a long time before perhaps never that the wires were siezed to the plugs and junk as well as the plugs siezed up hard.
 






I get the odd time when my engine will start sputtering if i lightly press the gas, but that was due to a temperature sensor wiring issue, not my spark plugs, r37ribution i dont know if this could be an issue for you or not, good luck with it.
 






as far as I know the best thing you can do for your FORD explorer is use motorcraft spark plugs and wires... I have motorcraft plugs in there with KEM wires... don't have much $ to spare
