I have a 4wd 97 Explorer..... do I have a rear LSD? Was it an option or standard? How can I tell.... OK... other than jacking up the rear end and spinning a tire and seeing if the other side turns....

It was an option the fastest way to know is looking at the axle code on the drivers door sticker if it's D and a number it's limited slip. If it's 2 numbers it's not.

the limited-slip gives you better traction. Basically, there's less chance of only 1 rear wheel spinning. For a street-only vehicle, there's really no need (except, it can certainly help a bit in the winter).
