I was wondering what can I do to give my 93 Eddie Bauer with an auto tranny better throttle response without emptying the bank account. Are KKM the only ones that make a cone filter for our trucks?

Also, how can I tell what kind gear ratio I run?

Thanks,

Leo

heres the cheapest way, buy a k&n filter cone with a metal back, then tap it and bolt it to your mass air sensor, if you want more go to a salvage yard and get a 5.0 truck mass air and cut out the middle metal piece and swap the sensors, i did this with a 95 f150, it helped alot.

What do you mean cut out the metal and swap the sensors? Is this pretty easy?
Thanks

yes its very easy,
first step is to go buy a k&n cone filter with a metal back on it, you can look threw the boxes till you find one.
next get a hold of a 5.0 mass air from anything, a mustang or truck anything. next un screw the screws which it whould have two and take out the filter. then take a hack saw and cut out the center post. you can get a grinder and grind the rough metal left from the hack saw. when you now look at the mass air it should be a wide open cylinder, next take your original sensor and swap the sensors, the 2 little sensor wires should be explosed when you look through it. the mass air it done, the next step is bolting the mass air to the k&n. This is easy and you can use self taping screws. When the filter is bolten to the mass air you can just put it on the end of your exsisting intake tube. and then your finished. it costs around 30 bucks for the filter and i got my mass air housing for free. If you want to take your intake one step further and have three piece explorer intake tube you can easilly swap out two of the rubber pieces for a 3 inch pvc pipe. This helps alot. just go to home depot and buy about 2 feet of 3 inch pvc and stick one side into the 90 degree rubber pipe that attaches to the throttle body. next connect a 45 degree elbo to the end of the pipe and then stick another piece of 3 inch pvc after it. get a 3 inch rubber connector piece which is in the same isle in home depot and mount it to the mass air you just made. this is such a simple intake to make and i would be happy to make it for anyone. the pvc parts cost around 12 bucks and the filter is 30, say the mass air is around 15 tops so that 57 bucks for a full 3 inch intake all the way to the throttle body, and if you keep the glue and pipes clean you can paint them silver and then actually look like an aluminim intake tube. I can explain in more detail if nessessay. good luck trying it.

:redexp: After you get more air comin' in, dump the stock throttle body and slap in a BBK performance throttle body and a Helix throttle body spacer. U will notice a difference immediately. To the tune of about $330.

or get a 63 mm throttle plate for cheap and gring your throttle body out, spend the 330 on a nitrous kit and really mak some power:bounce:

damn I wish I wasn't such a newb with auto equipment. I can only change the oil and do anything that doesn't require a lot of drilling lol. The only thing I've drilled in the truck was under the hood to hold the bug deflector, and by my pedals for my amp.

First of all, its a bad idea to swap in a larger MAS housing (like out of a 5.0) without recalibrating the MAS sensor. The MAS is one of the more sensitive sensors on the car. You would be much better off, spending the cash and getting a larger aftermarket MAS that is properly tuned.

However, a MAS is probably the one mod that gives the least bang for the buck on a near stock explorer. If I remember correctly, the stock is supposed to support near 300hp (Of course that doesnt mean a larger MAS at 200hp wouldnt help).

Also, Rebelyell has a good suggestion about the Throttle Body. I dont feel it has significant HP gains, but it gives great throttle response. You can really tell the diffrence. Then, get yourself either a K&N drop in, or a KKM unit (which is not smog legal by the way).

Uhm, forgive me but I'm not mechanically inclined. But I've been reading a lot of posts recently about Mass Air Sensors and Mass Air Filters and what replacing/cleaning those can do for someone. Someone had a link to a picture of what the Mass Air Filter was (thank you BTW). Last weekend I finally figured out how to remove the Sensor (thing held on with Torx screws and having 2 wire filaments) and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I put it back in and didn't notice much in the way of increased "get up and go". I see that some suggest replacing the Mass Air Filter with a bigger one for added power. I'm concerned about two things when doing this. Gas mileage and engine running hotter.
Maybe my lack of throttle response isn't related to the MAS or MAF, but those are the places I started looking into. Any ideas??

BTW, my '92 X has 180,000 miles:exp:

Milage should stay the same if not improve. Of course a lead foot will always lead to less milage. A larger throttle body, air filter, or MAS only lets in more air.. not more fuel. But, with a properly calibrated MAS and a lead foot, you should use more gas flooring it, but you will be producing more power as well.

Cleaning the MAS is considered maintence, although I would just go cleaning it unless you think something is wrong, as that sensor is pretty fragile.

I know this is an old thread but I got a question about one of the threads;

I used to have an 88 mustang 5.0 w/o the MAF.
When I was set to do some mods, and researched it I found that the next model year, they had the MAF,:( but I didn`t.
I had a mustang magazine that highlighted mods, and they said if you didn`t have one then get one.
The explanation was that the MAF tells your engine how much air is coming in, so any mods which affected the amount of intake air would be better handled by the car`s computer. It also said you could go to a 70mm TB, and didn`t mention a new, tuned MAF
My engine was set to run at a certain value for incoming air, along with some other stuff like o2 sensors, etc.

What I`m getting at is if my X has the MAF, and I want a larger throttle body, what is all this talk about getting a MAF that is "tuned" for it. Isn`t it just an instrument for calculating incoming air? Why can we put cone filters on without a problem?
-Or can the MAF only calculate a certain variance in flow, which a throttle body would exceed, thereby sending faulty info to the comp?

Interested to hear more on this cuz I`m confused!

Oh yeah about the gears, if your shifter knob says 1-2-3-4-od then you have 5 gears, not counting reverse which is normally not counted anyway, because it is a ******* gear that gets no respect.

;)
I`m kidding, look on your door sticker for the code, (bottom, towards right) then look in your owners manual for the translation (or put the code here, and I`ll tell ya)
