Yeah, I'm still wondering about my OD problem...(wont shift OUT of OD unless you FLOOR it...then you're at 4K on the tach....NOT impressed!!!

BUT, if I take my foot OFF the gas for any amount of time, and give it gas again, it WILL come out of OD.

Can somebody tell me what CAUSES the shift out of OD?

*****For instance, while I'm driving in OD...and I want to pass somebody, I give it gas, then I start pinging, then I give her even MORE gas, and this causes HEAVIER pinging...then WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA up to 4 thousand RPM's and back.*****

Is the shift on my 5R55E strictly electronically controlled?

I'm adjusting bands this weekend and crossing my fingers. My luck, it won't do a darn thing.

Why do you need to come out of OD? Do you tow or something?
From my experience, playing with that OD button ONLY leads to future problems.

Yeah the only time I turn the OD button off is if I tow something and thats because alot of people seem to say to have OD off while towing. I don't see why your OD wouldn't come off though if you press the button of floor it.

OK...say you guys accelerate onto the highway...you get up to around 60MPH, and you're truck drops into OD.

You're cruising along, and up comes a hill....now you start losing speed. Instinctively, you just depress the gas pedal more, looking for the transmission to downshift so you can increase your engine RPM's and gain speed.

Instead, the engine pings, and the transmission chugs. You're like, what the heck, my tranny won't shift...so you press the gas pedal down even MORE...and FINALLY, the transmission downshifts, and you're motor is SCREAMING.

In my Explorer (5.0) I give it just a LITTLE gas while in OD and the transmission shifts OUT of OD and into 3rd gear to accelerate.

might be tcm issues

OD (and 2nd) are created by applying the OD band in this transmission. They are controlled by a solenoid..... and some valves, and a servo, and a lever and a band... How is 2nd's shifting?

When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? Did you ever use fuel injector cleaner? Check your pressure at the fuel rail. How about a tune up?

+1 If you truck is pinging that is what you need to look at, detonation is never a good thing.

Sounds like your truck is down on power (if its pinging it is), pull your plugs and see what they look like.

Actually now that you mention it, while the 5R55E does not use any vacuum controlled components, a vacuum leak COULD affect other sensors... I bet if you look for a manifold leak or vacuum line leak and find one it and fix it...THAT MAY help you. GREAT CALL Tower !

Thanks for the replies guys.

I just purchased the truck, but I was underneath it the other day and theres a "somewhat" new looking NAPA fuel filter there.

Yeah, in a couple of other posts I mentioned I have unexplained oil loss (no trace of oil ANYWHERE!) but great compression and oil on the threads of the plugs on 4, 5 and 6 (right side of engine). I've been told numerous times now that a bad lower intake manifold gasket can cause the oil loss/ping.

I pulled an old code the other day, PO300, multiple cylinder misfire, which may have been caused by the pinging?

I would THINK I'd get a lean condition code if I'm pinging?

Also, I always thought the transmission just "did it's thing" regardless of engine issues. I guess not?

OH...2nd's shifting is PERFECT...

With electronic transmission controls, it is now common practice to address any other codes that come up before addressing tranny issues. Some things that COULD affect sensor inputs, also may NOT throw a code... So no, the tranny's "thing" is premised on inputs from multiple sensors these days.

Glacier, whatever transmission is in my '2000 Explorer 5.0...thats the tranny I want in my Ranger....I just LIKE how it shifts.

Transmission models don't dictate how a transmission shifts. And its probably safe to say that after a bit of miles, the same transmission model on two different vehicles will not shift the same way. It depends on many factors internal of the transmission like valve spring rates, band wear, etc.. My brother's old 5R55E for example was rebuilt to soft (grandmother-like) shifts while my 5R55E had very firm shifts.

older transmissions had a TV cable i think it was. basicaly this cable told a valve in the transmission how much throttle was applied and the shiffting was adjusted according to demand. more foot equals later shifts, moving into another gears area of operation it would downshift till it reached its new adjusted shift point. now its electronic. mine seems to have the delay but no pinging. i always wondered if it was part of the computers controll over the transmission, like its not being told to downshift from OD even if your foots down. it doesnt seem like its a mechanical issue at all, not to me anyways.

I have this exact same issue in my Ranger 4.0 SOHC & 5R55E, did you found your way out OP? Anyone? I know this post is 4 years old, but it's the most adequate to my situation.

Anyways, just for the record, the plug wired were bad, replaced them and problem solved.
Also changed the plugs.

good work...;) Burned tranny fluid will do the same thing. If the tranny is hot it will do that to try lower temperature, lock up the TCC.
