what could this do?

pulled the code p0402 on a 2000 ranger 3.0 flex fuel. Something about the egr/ dpfe sensor. If the sensor is bad could it make the vehicle run bad. How much would it be to replace.

Thanks Rick for the info but I looked at what they said about the dpfe and there is nothing there that said if the sensor is bad will my truck run crappy.
