What do I feed the Rear Diff.? *PICTURES*

I see that now, the picture is turned the wrong way. Im ordering it anyway, sure it will be fine.

It is also the inside of the cover. The ring gear section is concaved. Not convexed.

I had to laugh, it took me studying the picture to understand what you were saying. I'll be damned if he isn't right. I just looked at the bottom (or what is supposed to be the bottom) of the cover, the two cutouts go down when installed, that would make that plug high on the ring gear. I didn't even notice the pic was the inside of the cover. Nice catch

Great Picture

Whoever took that picture had no idea what that thing was. :D

It's not often I get to throw them fancy words around so I take advantage when I can. :D

Im replacing the cover because its all rusty and I dont want to clean it. That looks like a rubber plug stuck in it. Not sure if I want that. Do you have any experience with this? Is it a threaded bung? Or just a hole?

Bob

I have that same cover; the "plug" is an optional magnet. I left it in.

All advice is good advice.

One more thing, make sure the inside of the diff is cleaned out real good and a magnet is ran in it, to remove any metal. There is a small "Catch tray" on the bottom of the diff that will hold offending items when sitting still, but gets churned up while moving.

Parts are on order from Rock (yes I used the new discount code).
When I open her up, if I see Bits And Pieces (like you had). That is where I will draw the line and call a buddy that does it for a living. (Hey, Im just a computer guy that likes to take engines apart and put them back together).

Sorry for the confusion on my part. Guess I should wait till I am awake before I post, I might read things through a little better...lo

And I did understand that you had a way, way more complicate problem, I just wanted to cut off advice regarding rebuilding the limited slip. At that point I had no idea what lube to even put in it. My pos mounty along with others pointed me in the right direction. At no point in time I would have thought the answer was on the door sticker. (after reading the sticker I lowered my tires down to 26psi from 55 psi, how could the sticker be wrong?)

Anyway, I appreciate any advice I get. And I thank everyone here. :)

Wait till you see what I did today, while I was under the truck coating the fill plug with liquid wrench. :) Everyone will get a kick out of this. I have pictures and video to prove I am a Redneck. (No offence to rednecks, I believe if you cant fix it with duct tape, throw it away) The entire thing falls under the category, what can I fix with four dollars and fifty cents.

Waiting for parts,

Bob

Its just a thing!

I have that same cover; the "plug" is an optional magnet. I left it in.

I see that now. Its just a round magnet.

Not a hole in it or anything like that, just a doughnut magnet.

Thanks for the head up, I did order it from Rock.

I will post pictures when it gets here.

Thanks again, I though I would need to buy something like a drain plug for that, it looked like a welded in bung hole to me. What a crap picture, but the price was right.

Thanks again,

Bob

It is the Dorman one, right? NAPA just rebadges that same exact one, they put their label over the Dorman one. Its a decent quality piece, made in China though.

Parts are Parts. Or are they?

This is what I ordered from RockAuto.

It says Dorman, great, china junk steel. If I knew that, I may have reconsidered. That thing should rust out quick. (made from old Schlitz cans?)

Clean it up and hit it with a coat of primer and a few of black krylon if that is a concern.

No need to. No matter how much penetrating oil you use (and liquid wrench is one of the most useless IMHO), it won't help. You need to apply some gentle heat to the housing and plug to soften the thread locker used to seel it. Just a little heat with a propane torch is enough to let it come right out. It doesn't need to be cherry-red, but hot enough that you can't touch it comfortably, and it'll almost always spin right out.

And, for the record, it's definitely a steel tank. I wrestled more than my fair share of them back in my production days at Ford. (I used to build those tanks specifically)

The Tank in my 94 EB is plastic, why would they go to a steel tank after that?

Steel is likely cheaper. Plastic is better at least where I live, all steel tanks rust out at some point.

Steel is recyclable, plastic gas tanks are sent to the dump by our local wreckers.

SO which is better???
