As the title says, what does it take to set off a 97 explorer alarm? I know some get set off by noise, some by motion, some by getting hit. My stepdads saturn if you locked it with the key fab and unlocked it with the key it would go off.

Why i ask is because over the weekend my alarm went off and was going for about a half hour before i noticed it was on. Along with that ive gone out twice now and the battery has been dead. I havent done anything with the radio that was put in 3 weeks ago, it just started happening within the past week.

I think your alarm is setting itself off. I had the same problem with mine when I first got it. I had to replace my driver side door lock. The driver side door would not lock and the alarm saw it as unlocked when all the other doors were locked and it would go off at random times

Factory alarm or aftermarket>?
There's a pin switch for the hood, probably also wired into the dome light so that is someone opens the door without dis-arming the alarm..., some have motion/vibration sensors and the newer alarms or more top-of-the-line alarms have proximity sensors. There's hundreds of possibilities.
The factory anti-theft/alarm system is:
In addition to the perimeter alarm that uses the door open warning lamp
switch and hood switch, the RAP module also uses the ignition lock anti-theft
switch and the autolock/relock feature to prevent theft of the vehicle.
^ Door Open Warning Lamp Switch.
The door open warning lamp switch communicates to the RAP module through the
Generic Electronic Module (GEM). This input to the RAP will cause the
anti-theft alarm to be sounded if the anti-theft alarm was armed.
^ Ignition Lock Anti-Theft Switch.
The ignition lock anti-theft switch can detect when the ignition key cylinder
is broken or "slam pulled" during a theft. The ignition lock anti-theft
switch is always monitored by the Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module.
This allows the alarm system to be triggered in case the ignition lock
anti-theft switch detects tampering of the ignition key cylinder (even in the
event the alarm is inactive at the time).

Ah, hood pin switch.

For some reason i couldnt get my hood to latch...only prelatch. That could explain the first time. But the second time i dont know. My drivers door handle has been sticking and such.

The factory "horn" alarm or an aftermarket alarm?

The aftermarket alarms I have had over the years usually have switches or POTS to adjust the sensitivity for impact, motion or glass. Some can also have additional sensors added to detect and react to events.

I once had a Fox Mustang that had a suspension so firm that it would move the sensitivity POTS on the alarm box. If a mouse blew gas a block away the alarm would go off...most annoying at 2am.:D

This is all stock. Hence why its in the "Stock 95-01" forum. I was thinking about getting a viper system or something just to piss people off. The ones around here that get set off by noise IE: loud exhaust, go off after a bit of time. Mine doesnt. It ran for a whole half hour or longer before i finally got up to see whos damn alarm was going off. Unfortunately it was my own.

:bsnicker:That's funny!!! Alarm's have become so comon that not only do we not pay attention to someone else's alarm.....we don't even pay attention to our OWN alarms.:dunno:

Yea, and for me living on the other side of the building on the third floor. I could barely hear it.
