There is another possibility. If the transfer case blows itself up, it might go to car heaven, and get greeted by 70 virgin transmissions which have never mated with a transfer case:

well the new case has been in there for about 1 1/2 weeks and no noise yet. its a safe bet now that the tcase was the culprit.
