What Have I Done!

I think I may have goofed about 5k miles ago when I changed my tranny filter and oil in my wifes 97 4x4 Explorer. I think I put plain Mercron in instead of Mercron V. I checked the fluid today and its kind of dark and smelly. I went ahead and pumped as much out through the cooler line as I could and replaced it with Mercron V. Have I hurt anything by using the wrong stuff for that long? I hope not cause my wife will have my butt.

Well, my tranny blew about a month after the wrong fluid was put in, run for 400 miles, and changed.

I have about 76k miles on my tranny using a non Merc V ATF - Mobil 1, Never had a problem.

I had my tranny serviced by a shop back 2 years ago and they used regular Mercon. That was 2 years ago and about 6 months ago, I used Mercon V and haven't noticed any problems. Mercon V is a synthetic if I remember right. I'm not sure how much of a difference there is between Mercon & Mercon V. I'm wondering if the viscosity and lubricating properties are pretty the same.
