What is it...and why was it in my transmission drain pan

Hi folks! I recently changed the transmission fluid on my 1997 Explorer XLT AWD V8. I found this part in the pan. Any clue what it is? Is it important? My tranny seems to run the same as before albeit slightly smoother due to the fluid change.

I spent quite awhile trying to find a place to shove it (in the tranny) but alas, to no avail. So I'm gonna shove it here.
