I went and looked at a truck. It is a solid 56. I will go over the body first.

Almost everything has been done. He replaced two of the cab corners with metal patch panels. He replaced one part below the drivers door (front of it) with metal. He replaced part of the floor board (drivers side) with metal. He replaced the passenger rear fender with a good one. The passenger side front fender needs work or repleced. It has been hit (I would fix it, but I don't see a point in telling him that). He has the original tailgate, but its rough. He has a steel custom made on one it now (no latch assemblies yet). The running boards are in pretty good shape. A little surface rust is about it (one small rust spot I saw).

The whole body has been off the frame and the frame is all painted.

It has the probably not the original Y-Block (bored .30 over) and 3 speed. He had the radiator rodded out and its all redone (even the fan shroud is nice). The gas tank was done the same way (nicely painted) and the sending unit/guage works. He fired it right up and it runs smoothly. It has dual flowmaster mufflers, but no tail pipes yet. He ran new brake lines and new pads a few years ago, but the cylinders may leak (from sitting). It had a pedal just sitting there so I am not sure. He put new bearings in the steering box. It has very little play in the wheel with it just sitting. The seat is a bench seat out of something (might be original for all I know) and is in fair shape. The rest of the cab is just metal. He replaced the pinion seal as well.

He has new wood in the bed. The strips are black powder coated. The front bumper is black powder coated.

To get it street legal it would need new door glass (has all the parts for it-just cracked glass). It has a new rear glass/ seal. it has a new front window seal (wiper blade scratches in window). It would need tail lights. It needs the windshield wiper parts assembled and installed (no arms). It needs the turn signal switch installed and wired. He has the original looking switch that goes on the steering column. It has no rear bumper at all.

I think all the original emblems are there, but not in the best shape. I am not too fond of them being on it anyway. LOL

It has the painted grill not chrome. It has a V8 emblem on it. He does not have the trim rings for the headlights.

Over all I think its a pretty good truck, but needs a lot of little stuff. I wanted a modern drivetrain is the big thing I guess.

What it takes to get it street legal right now is the biggest concern.

I am going thorugh parts magazines and trying to gather up prices on what it needs just to be legal to drive.

It been off the frame (all painted up nice). It is the stock leaf spring, although he may have removed some leaves. I didn't count them, nor do I know how many are factory. Factory size tires are huge 16" ones. Just changing to a smaller size would lower it some. I actually like how it sits with those tires. I don't think you can tell in the pics, but it has some meats under the back.

Thw wheels look good (need some center caps) and the tires are fair (BFGs).

I worked up a rough list of what it needs to be street legal. I only have one parts catalog here so far, so I will just use it for a rough idea. Its from mid fifty f-100 parts.

Gas tank body boot.......$15.00
Vent glasses.................$22.00 (each)
Side glasses.................$45.00 (each)
Door anti-rattle kit.........$120.00 (for both windows)
Glass tape kits..............$10.00 (to install windows)
Door seals....................$55.00 (both doors)
Inside door handles.......$15.00 (each)
Window Cranks.............$30.00 (each)
Windshield wiper arms...$15.00 (each-needs blades from local)
Black taillight kit............$120.00 (set-need bulbs local)

Tail pipes from flows back.

Needs some sort of rear bumper as well.

I know I will have to buy (scrounge) a bunch of bolts, screws, nuts, etc. He has a box of then sitting there from when they dismantled the truck, but stuff gets lost over time.

Can any of you give me an idea what its worth as it sits?

I wish is I could give you a price but don't know. I really like it. Just wondering, would it be taged under antiques, and if so would that make it easier to get tags and how about emissons? All I can say is if you like it and can afford it buy it. People can say from $2000 to $6000. But in reality the benchmark of worth is what is was bought or sold at last. Again, if it makes you happy to have it, then its worth it no matter what you paid, and you don't have to tell anybody what you paid.

Id love to see you have it. This would really be a neat project.

Nice looking project. What kind of front spindles and rear end does it have?
I would offer $2000 but not over $3000.

He has the title, so getting tags is no problem. We have no emmisions (or inspections), but it was made before the emissions laws. Those laws don't apply. It doesn't even have seat belts.

Its all stock suspension (basically everything mechanical is stock). The body is really straight. The engine runs quite well. I see prices for complete rust buckets and backet cases that are from $1500-$2000. If this were completed (with paint) it would be a $12-20,000 truck (maybe more).

To get it street legal would be less than $1k, paint and body (for me) would be around $500. I am not sure what all else would need to be done, but probably rebuild the front end (king pins, etc.), add mono leaves, shocks, do the interior. Yeah it adds up fast.

Thats the problem. I know he has a lot more than that in it just with all the stuff he has replaced. You never get everything back if you sell in the middle of a project, but I understand why he is asking so much.

I know that I won't pay whats hes asking. I guess its a just wait and see at this point. I will find one eventually (if this doesn't work out).

thanks for the opinions guys.

Guys I appreciate the advice, but I was just advised to just move on. For the price he is asking, I can get a street legal drivable truck. This one would take $1,000+ and many hours just to be legal.

I am going look for other prospects. :)
