What is that bracket for? It is loose sitting on the leaf spring and rattles like hell... Can I fix it somehow?

Do like my wife says..."Hot Glue It!" Seriously, I have no clue.

i get the impression that its supposed to keep the leaf pack tight, mine doesnt have those but my neighbor's ranger does and friends superduty does too

Yup, keeps the leaves aligned.

do not remove or your springs will start turing left and right
to tighen slide a floor jack under rear end (to comprise the springs... slide it (little thing circled) forward toward the axel then let your truck back down that should stop the rattle

hammer it back towards the axle , it will tighten up.

You can also cut it off and replace it with a new U bolt style from auto parts store.

That item is known as a leaf spring clamp or rebound clamp. Purpose is to prevent the leaves from fanning out, something you definitely do not want to occur, especially on the driver's side near the gas tank. Hannering it toward the axle may help to snug it up. Easy to replace: http://www.huskyspring.com/main.taf?cat=160

the problem is that there is a hole in the top leaf spring to locate that bracket, so I can't hammer it towards the rear end. So should I just cut it out and replace it with a new one?

wow, so i suppose i should get some, eh?
