What is this thats highlighted in red? Its on the AC unit near the back firewall on the left side.

Highlighted in blue you can see the vacuum line to it is broken.

Do I need this thing? I took it off and its a sealed unit not connected to anything else. I need to fix the vaccum line that broke so Im wondering what to make of it.

Any ideas?

vaccum canister

fix the line, yes you need it

This is indeed a vacuum reservoir. You are missing the vacuum switch. I have included a picture below.
There is a line that leaves the vacuum manifold tree on the driver's side valve cover. This line goes to the switch. Unless this was capped at the tree previously you have a vacuum leak and should be fixed now.

This line goes to the switch and provides a vacuum for the reservoir. There is a line that leaves the switch, goes through a line in the firewall and goes to an inline connector behind the cover on the passenger side under the glovebox. The connection then goes to the MAX A/C control on the environmental control. There is a line that leaves the MAX A/C that goe back to a vacuum motor behind the glovebox; pinch in the sides of the glovebox door and it will drop down. This motor opens and closes the outside vent damper and causes the air to recirculate within the cabin. In the pic it's the vertical rod. When the car starts, MAX A/C is on and vaccuum is achieved you'll hear a dull thump from the right hand side - that's the damper closing.

The reservoir switch draws vaccum from the reservoir when the vehicle is under acceleration and keeps the vent closed.

Right now you have no recirc for your air conditioning and a possible vacuum leak. Cap off the tree port until a fix is made, and fix the damper at you're leisure. The tubing for repair can be bought from O'Reilly along with the connectors. The switch you may have to get from the dealer or the boneyard; look for it hanging from a tube by the firewall. You may be lucky and it's still there. I drilled a hole in the firewall to run my tube through rather than try and disassemble the bundle.

Ah, I get it now!

Yes there was a vacuum leak from the T unit, which I assume is the switch mentioned above, that comes from the vacuum tree off the intake manifold. I did tape that off.

And yes, I noticed the other line in the bundle that I had no idea where it went too. So when I fix it, I will have better AC? I thought it was cold enough, but here in Florida, it can never be too cold.

Thanks a bunch.

Yes, the A/C will be more efficient. When fixed, putting the slide lever in MAX A/C will be circulating the air inside the cabin instead of cooling outside air.

Fixed it yesterday. Got some 1/8" line and linked everything back up. I used shrink tubing, steel wire and tape for suppors to connect the new tube to the old one thats in the bundle that goes behind the glove box.

Alot cooler, alot quicker now!

Thanks all!
