What keeps the battery in place?

Hi again,

sorry for my retarded question but,

recently got a new battery for my 91 Explorer and discovered that nothing is holding it in place. I have gone trough several pictures on the forum and also havent noticed any extra stuff holding it in place. Should the battery really just chill there freely? I was thinking to atleast tie it in place with some wire or something, or a rubber band.

There is a triangle shaped piece of plastic that has a hole in the center that is used to hold the battery.

It goes in, pointy side facing down and the bolt goes from the top down. As the bolt is tightened it pulls the triangle down and it grabs the bottom lip of the battery.

Keep in mind, Triangle is the overall look of it.. it is a more complicated shape but that will let you know if you have the part.

Yeah, it's on the side of the battery, all the way down at the base, so you'll need an extension. I think it's a 10 mm bolt.

I found a picture of it at Summit.. They even sell it for $5

It's a dorman p/n 00588

They even show it with the tall bolt which will be nice since you don't need an extension then.

Check a junkyard, that is where I found my last battery holder. It may take several vehicles to find one, but worth a shot.

Check your local chain auto parts store for that dorman part # too.. It's a $6 part..

Of course, if your like me, the junkyard is the better choice. You never know what you need until you see it...

I changed my battery 3 years ago. That bolt holding it in snapped right off & half is stuck in the bolt hole. Never fixed. Been fine.
