Anyone know what kind of paint is used on the stock running boards?
I am starting to get a little rust on mine, which annoys me since it's only a 2001. I guess Chicago winters have taken their toll on them, too much salt.

If they are body color, it is the same paint as the rest of your vehicle.

No they are grey.

try posting the Q on Autobodystore.com, you'll get an answer there you can rely on from Pros.

I'm not 100% sure on this but it could be Med. Titanium??

The paint is normally powder coated, so the proper color "Touch-Up" paint doesn't match very well. I had my 97 Sport's re-painted the same color as the main body (Willow Green) instead of the silver that they were. I had the body shop sand blast them first. They also put the flex additive in that is used for bumpers. It just helps cut down on the stone chipping. I'd post PICs, but I sold the truck this past Feb.

i might be wrong but i always thought they looked powder coated......but im stupid so dont listen to me

if you have the 2001, shouldnt u be covered under warranty? some dealers claim the 1 year 15000 mile paint , but the dealer i bought my x from covered it for 3 years 36000 miles. try going to your dealer, if not several other dealers.

I drive alot, I'm at 45,000 miles.

I will be wathcin this thread, I have the same problem on my '01 Sport

My 98 Sport is covered with rust on the drivers side board. I priced it from the dealer it was $320.00 thats a little crazy !! I wonder if it is covered under the Rust Thru warranty ? I also have a Ford extended warranty I wonder if it would be covered, If not I might just unbolt them and run without them, I think the truck may look better....LOL

I used photo shop to see what my X would look like without the running boards and I didn't like it as much.

I took a closser look at the paint and it almost feels rubbery. the rust is only right next to the rubber pad.

Go to a paint shop/store. They have a little hand held paint scanner that they used to get the paint code. For less than $50 they could give enough to spray paint the step bars on both sides.

I went through a similar headache with mine. I found out the running boards that comes in many 2 tone Explorers is called "Poly Grey".

SWLathrop, how much did that cost? I am thinking about doing the same thing.

dood this is a common problem - i took mine off for about a year and notice the tires were throwing a lot of stones and chipping the paint on the underside of the doors...even the painted door handles of my '95.....i ended up sand blasting them, taking a grinder with a wire brush to get into the pits, bombing them with rust check primer then covering with rocker panel paint (black).....it didn't last the winter....not sure what to do next.....they are actually off right now and have been for a week now.....and i only have the brackets on the vehicle....i need to solution this fast as i am embarrassed to be driving my X around with only the brackets....

ditto..mine are peeling like crazy

I believe new running boards are expensive because ford will only sell you a set of two. Thats how it was back in 98 anyhow

Well, fortunately for me it didn't cost me anything. I had some rust spots appearing where the rear wheel flare was rubbing on the paint and some bubbles along the door(s) weld seam. These were repaired under the 5 year rust thru warranty. The repair shop thru in painting the boards since they had the paint and I pulled the boards off for them and reinstalled them.

They did however quote me a price of about $100 if I pulled and installed the boards. I would just shop around. If you do have it done, make sure they use the flexing agent for bumpers. The paint just holds up better from the stones...

Herc, herc, herculine! :)
Ask Gerald, he knows all about it.

have you thought about doing the steps in Kameleaon sp. paint? My x is green and I did my nerf steps ground effects in the silver/green color. They make a red-navy blue color shift It would pretty cool. I'll post up some pics when I get my digi camera.
