I thought I would share this tip...I purchased a thermostat from the local auto parts joint and I was given the wrong size part.
I went back and told them again that I have a 1998 Ford Explorer SOHC and they gave me the same part...I found out that my Explorer is the Ford Explorer EFI. 48% of the 1998 Exlporers were made EFI and 52% were made SOHC.
The easy way to tell is check your VIN and if the 8th letter is an X, its the EFI. If the 8th letter is an E...its the SOHC.

Hope it helps someone.

Ya I found out my 98 Explorer was really a 99 according to the thermostat size. I originally bought one for a 98 but it was wrong size

i think your getting confused on your engine abbreviations, the two engines that came in the 98's were the SOHC(single overhead cam) and OHV(overhead valve AKA pushrod) both engines are EFI, which stands for electronic fuel injection. 8th letter "x" means its an OHV, 8th letter "e" means its sohc.
