What does XLT stand for and what makes an XLT?
The reason I ask is because I have had 2 '98 XLT's and one was AWD with 5.0, no leather no sunroof The other is SOCH 4.0 2WD with leather and sunroof.
Anyone know?
thanks,

The 4 trim leveles were Sport, XL, XLT and Eddie Bauer.

The XLT trim level had standard features like captain's chairs up front, a rear window wiper/washer and defroster, and aluminum wheels, power door locks and windows that were not standard on the XL. The standard engine was the 4.0.

AWD, leather, 5.0, and sunroof were optional on the XLT.

Does XLT stand for anything? Probably not, just sounds like "excellent", a marketing gimmick that someone at Ford made up back in the 80s.

what about limited?

Oops, forgot that one. It included alloy wheels and trim, power-adjustable leather bucket seats with memory and standard running boards. Still had the 4.0 as the standard engine, with the 5 speed auto AOD trans.

i am not sure, but i dont think the limiteds had an aod trans?

your right, it was the 4R70W for the 5.0 engine and the 5R55E with the 4.0. That is until 2002 when everything went to the 5R55W

Thank you!!!:D

Don't all explorers come with rear window wipers? My parents had a 91 XL with one as well as my 2000 XLS.

I've never seen a stock Explorer without one. Mine is an XL and it has it, but from the looks of it my XL has a lot of optional features that most wouldn't.

What about XLS??

Also, did all the 'Limited' versions come with the monochrome paint scheme? (ie - bumpers, trim, etc all painted)

nope, my sister had a limited with the two tone scheme

XLT stands (stood) for Extra Luxury Trim. But, now the T not only stands for a trim package but an option package also.
