It is such an informative post thank you all mechanic buffs for spilling the beans about what I can do to help my old explorer to get back in shape.
The way I see it, I will start with the exhaust, air intake, and chip. Then move on to 4.10 gears incl' auxillary transmission cooler and external filter and will get the 2" and 3" lift. I figure, I will be invest ~$2000 by the time it is done. I like this ride allot (never had a big car--SUV, or Truck) and thinking on keeping it for a while. My only concern with investing in it is the engine.
Do you think this poppa’s its on his last legs or can I breathe some youth to it?
The other question is, I am trying to find the conical air intake assembly for 1991 Explorer and no one makes them. It seems that all of these air intake modifications are only offered to 1996 and newer models ( I am tempted to try the Ghetto air intake I saw posted here if it all fail). do you have any idea where can I get 1991 performance air intake?

Kurts Kustom Motorsports sells em... they are 80 bucks though :thumbdwn:

JC Whitney had them. You can find the filter for cheap, like 20 bucks. The adapter is the tricky part. Ive seen a couple threads with ways to make once using PVC meterial. Search on it.

I was just thinking, if your just starting to mod the FIRST and very best thing that you should do is spend some money on a compleat tune up; plugs, wires, fuel filter, change all the fluids, etc. This way your Explorer is running the best is possibly can before you start throwing mods at it. This advice comes from personal experiance...lets just say i started modding my first car before it was running right and it caused a lot of problems;)

That's what i did

My X came to me with a blown head gasket and several other problems (alternator, ect.). I spent 300 on a full gasket set, new plugs, new plug wires, new head bolts, alternator tune-up, an oil change, and a coolant flush. I'm also considering putting in new rods and rockers. I cleaned the oil off everthing i could. Then when i'm done putting it back together (i havn't finished putting the seals in yet, stuck bolts you know) i'm changing the filter element, adjusting the tps sensor, and adjusting the throttle. Then i'll think about performance upgradesl.

while you have the heads off i would get them ported or polished becasue i heard that will do wonders for this engine. or any engine for that matter
