what do i have to do to my doors to mount 6.5 in components, i dont want kick panels, i want this sucker looking stock, i know it can be done, any help is appreciated
Well you will basically just have to make some wooden plates to mount them in, thats all, easy. Your choice, you can mount just the 6.5" woofer in the factoryspot and mount the tweeter elsewhere, or you can mount the tweeter right next to the woofer.
If you have the JBL system in there you will find it already has components in the door when you tear into it, there is a 4" driver sitting right newxt to a tweeter in a little box shaped just like a 5x7" speaker.
Now I haven;t done an install in a 97, so it may be different but I doubt it.
If you want to keep it stock you are going to have to make adaptor plates. When I do this for really good customers or friends I build them out of aluminum instead of wood.
Would it be better to have 6.5s in the front or the rear? I have a set of 5.25s in the front already, but i found 6.5 replacements which i'm gonna switch them out for. In my rears, i have 5 x7 kenwood excelons.......should i replace these with the 5.25 component set? All i would have to do is find some new tweeters. Also, would it be better for me to get an external crossover like this one:

instead of the inline one that comes with the Fanatic P system?
I understand that i need to use a crossover.......i just want to know if the "screw down terminal "type is better than the "in-line" type. Also i was wondering if the 5.25 component set will sound better in the rear instead of the current Kenwood excelons. Thanks for the help!
It just like making them out of wood. Get some 1/4 aluminum from a metal supplier and make sure you have a jig saw with a couple of sharp blades. When I make them I place the factory speaker face down and I trace out the shape or factory speaker on to the metal, mark the mounting holes from the factory speaker and drill them out. I next take the template that come with the new speakers and line them up as much as possible inside the trace of the factory speaker. You might be out side the trace but thats fine. I then cut out the speaker openings with the right size hole saws. I will then cut the adaptor out making sure it is large enough for the new speakers You might cut it bigger than what you traced fron the factory speaker.
black Magic......what size rims do you have? i know its totally off topic but i was jus wondering........Oh yeah, i'm still wondering if anybody can tell me if the "screw down type crossover" like on this auction

liquidx9, on my 91, there is a rubber boot betweent eh door and the body that can come off, well out of each side then u can use a coat hanger or fish tape like black magic was talking about.
By the way black magic, did u have to remove ur dash to get to the hole in the door jamb to run te wires, or do you know what i would need to do on a 91? cant figure out how to get wire my fronts because of that.
