On 2nd Gens, yes - Radio display on the stock radio does have a history of going bad.
BUT start with the basics (and cheaper fix) and check the settings/move the thumbwheel on your Dimmer Switch/Cabin Light Switch, because these frequently go on the fritz as well as they are exposed to a lot of voltage/heat over 20+ years.
With your EX running, rotate the dimmer switch up and down, and "snap" the wheel to the left and to the right, all the while watching your radio display.
